MOMO **** + short shifter mod

Well, I was test fitting the MOMO sphere shifter and thought to myself, the shifter is way too high (ends up 1 cm taller than the oem and THAT was too
high too). I was feeling brave and out came the hacksaw! I took about 4 cm (1.5") off the top of the shift rod, stuck the new **** on there and voila!

Okay, it wasn't quite that easy. The top part of the shaft where the original **** sits is thinner, so when you cut that off you're left with a bigger
diameter hump that the MOMO **** doesn't quite fit over. It took a bit of sanding to get it to fit, but it wasn't too dificult. Overall the new height ends up
about 3 cm shorter (1.25") than stock.
I really like the new height, it feels perfect and the shift throws are now about 15% shorter.

Sorry I didn't take pictures of the install, but there's a good thread about that around here somewhere. btw the old shifter pulled off with a good hard tug, no problem.

looks good. so you had to sand it down to that stock top diameter!?.. seems like a lot of sanding lol. and what about the little notch or whatever holds it on? does it just end up "pressure fitted" on now?

seems like a cool idea, but im guessing that **** is different than the usual stock replacement ****, like my Whalen....it depends on those stock notches, especially the notched out top of the stick...

the momo doesn't use the notches, so it doesn't matter if you cut them off. It's a one way trip though, you can't put the original one back on.
It comes with different size spacers (sleeves) so you can get a tight fit with most cars, then there are 3 set screws to hold it in place. The chrome collar you see at the bottom slides up to hide the screws. Different from the Whalen, but still a good secure system.
It took about 10 minutes of sanding the bulge on the shaft to get it small enough. No sanding would be needed if you didn't want to shorten the shifter, but I definitely prefer it this way.

Nice job grodenglaive. Makes me want to do that to mine. It's definitely a cheaper alternative to a shortshifter. But like you said, it's a one way ticket. I like the MOMOs more just because it fits so much better in my hand than the stock MINI.

I have a question, are you able to get the boot to stick better to the ****? Our MOMOs don't have any clips to clip to the boot and sometimes the boot slips lower and junk gets in there.

So far the boot is stiff enough to stay up by itself, but it is loose at the top. I was thinking of just wrapping some electrical tape around the shaft to increase the diameter, so the boot would have a snug fit.

yup the tape trick works. I used a big rubber oring grommet on mine to hold it up to my Whalen
