Plasti dip FTW

Got myself a can of plasti dip spray an decided to black out my car with my friend. Here's some pics of the progress and final results.

Here I masked off the edge of the stripes to get rid of the white edging from the factory stripes. I never liked the white outline. I also masked off my headlights. (We did a much better job than it looks with the headlights, the pic was taken before we were done masking it.) Unfortunately when I was peeling the tape around the stripes the plasti dip came off with it, and when it didnt it was rippled on the edges. So I just decided to leave the white on.

then I decided to paint the chrome around the grille.

here's the final results... It looks sooo much more agressive. I love how the grille is black on the outside and green on the inside.

I also plasti dipped my gas gap, Hood scoop, spray painted the S side grille in black, and plasti dipped my rear mini logo, but left the circle unpainted.

I still got more to come.
-chrome lining around the body of the car below the windows
-exhaust tips
-strip right above the rear license plate holder
-Cooper S badge
-door handles (maybe)

oh and I also lowered the front licence plate bracket one notch so it doesn't cover the bottom half of the grille. I definitely recommend that to anyone. It gives it a cleaner look.

You definitely have some ca-ho-nez to be spraying your car with only portions being masked...

How was the over spray with that product?

It looks like it turned out quite well!

It's plasti-dip... overspray wipes right off.

Yup no worries with overspray. I actually didn't get any overspray except for my rear badge which I wiped off. it sprays out very clean.

wow! I would be so nervous doing it that way...my worry would be with the quality of the tape you used to mask stuff off. I just had a horrible experience taping off my living room walls to paint the ceiling....we used very high quality painters tape and when were were finished we pulled it off and it took off tons of paint from the wall almost everywhere where there was painters tape.
So anyway...how'd the tape work on your car? Any sticky parts left on, or damage ...?

But it does look very good, and that seems to be an swesome alternative to taking everything off and dipping them separately...

TBH it did peel off with the tape when I did the stripes, and there are a few hidden areas on the grille where there's tiny pieces of tape left. I'm sure I can get them out but I'm a little afraid it will peel with the plasti dip.

It really isn't perfect at all if you get up real close. But considering I can just peel it all off as if I never dis anything, I don't really care. As long as there's no damage.

The trick to peeling the tape off is to trim the plastidip with an xacto first so the tape doesn't take any of the plastidip with it.

We were going to do that, but on the outside ends of the white on the stripes, is the paint. I wasn't going to leave 4 nice straight scratches on my hood.

Looks good!

I would be worried about doing the exhaust tips though. I think you'd be dripping melty plasti-dip all over the highway.

^ for tips it would be better to use high temp engine paint or have them powder coated. PC is not that expensive, and if you have access to a junk oven somewhere or kiln, you can purchase the PC stuff at Harbor Freight and DIY.

The PD will just melt off.

Black textured powder coat is the way to go on tips. Perfect match for the black trim texture and color.

Peel the tape off while it is still wet. That should give you a clean edge and it won't tear when wet.

The tips don't get hot. All I had to do was unscrew them with an Allen key and spray. The coating is staying on after a few days. I also sprayed the strip above the license plate holder.

Xnotfunky: I actually did that with the front mini logo. Next time I buy a new can I'm going to redo the stripes.

When you guys have done your door handles, what did you do about the keyhole? Just spray it and assume your keyfob never dies, or mask it?

Re-did the stripes again. This time I peeled the tape off before it was dry so it wouldn't peel.

in semi dark lighting like the pic above you can hardly tell there's stripes with the black outline. I love it.

I really like that. I hope it doesn't peel. Let us know if it does after you wash it a couple times.

That pic was taken right after I washed it less than an hour after I did the stripes. No peeling so far atleast.
