Start/stop button???

Hey I was wondering if it would be possible to get the start/stop engine feature found on the r56 installed on the r53. If so, how? If not, why? Please don't flame me, I just think it would be cool to update/touch up the r53 and this seems to be a cool option I'd like to see on an r53. I searched google for it and apparently I'm the only one considering this...?

You can get a start/stop button from Moss MINI.It's a cool feature, but nothing like the one in the R56s. You still have to use the key in the ignition to unlock the steering column. But it's not a big deal as cheaper companies like KIA are starting to use this feature. I honestly thought about doing it to mine, but still having to turn the key and then pushing the button seemed like it would get annoying after a while. Good luck.

Yea that does kind of defeat the purpose a bit lol, I was hoping to see more of like an electronic key and everything, like an actual r56 set up. btw is your car named after the demon on supernatural?

Turning the key and pushing the button isn't that bad... I had an S2000 for a while, and it used the same sort of setup. Still a key, still had to turn it to the on position, but there was still a bit of coolness factor having to push the button to get the car to start.

Yea I suppose, it's great that it deletes the cigarette lighter port seeing as how I don't smoke, I guess I will have to highly consider this mod, anyone know how hard it is to install or how much it would cost for the install? And a few more questions, does it shut the car off as well? Do you just push it quickly or do you actually have to hold the button? And will the car still start by the key as well?

It's on Real OEM here:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...03&hg=61&fg=95

I thought about doing this, but don't know what other parts there is to make it all work. Sometimes price is an option. (at least to my wife )

That oem one seems a bit more expensive/complicated, seeing as how you still have to put the key in the ignition to unlock it. The aftermarket one seems to be more affordable and practical. IMO

The coolness factor is there. It's not that complicated of an install, just tedious. Oh, and my car was named after Lilith the supposed first wife of Adam. This is according to Hebrew folklore.

More affordable yes, but you still have to do the same on the MossMini one (look at the description).

With both, you first have to put the key in the ignition and turn it to the first position. Now, you can just turn it a little further and start the car. Or would you rather proceed by taking your hand off the key and reaching for the button (and with the MossMini it will be all the way down at the cigarette lighter).

I actually have an R53 center dash trim panel with a start button in it that I've been wondering what to do with. I'll have to see if I have the harness for it in a box.

Well that wouldn't really bother me, reaching to the cigarette lighter, I'd actually be happy to delete it in a way, but then again a cell phone charger can do that as well lol but I'm really wondering if you can actually swap the whole ignition from the r56 into the r53. Like the r56 key and everything. No turning of the key needed.

Always thought the Moss one looked a bit corny with all the plasticky Red, Yellow and Green "look at me" colors, from what I recall. The oem one is unpretentious yet cool, same as the one on the Z8.

That's because I think the one from MOSS is a universal one.

In my first car, when I first got into modding cars, I had an Ignited brand Push-Button start. This was before I knew how to/dared to do any work myself, and the performance shop I used did the install. So, unfortunately I have no clue how it was done. It was also on a '91 Integra LS, which is about as similar to a Mini as a pancake. I don't know IF this could be done, and I REALLY don't know how, but here goes...

They first removed the key-lock cylinder and removed the steering column lock (that prevents the wheel from turning w/out the key). Then they installed the button into the location where the keyhole was. That was a cool, clean looking setup. Finally, they wired a generic key lock cylinder and installed it into the glove box. Ultimately, that was like a cut-off switch. I could leave it in and on and nobody saw it. I would just unlock the car and hit the button. But I could also remove the key making the button inoperative.

It was cool, and if you didn't know about the key in the glove box it was just like any push-button, non-key set up. I would highly suspect that this would never work on a more modern car, but to someone smarter than I, it could be a starting point for a plan.

I have also thought about getting the Moss Mini push start button. Just for fun and something cool. I have a question though. Do you think it would interfere with a Viper remote start kit?

Has anyone just wired in there own button? Seems like it would be pretty simple instead of buying the harness.

I have the moss one, but haven't installed it yet. I need to figure out how to make it not ugly first.

Well, in all seriousness, installing it down where the cigarette lighter is makes it kind of inconspicuous. I don't think that it will make the interior less attractive.
