Tail light and Headlight tinting

This might be a stupid question, but I really like the look of MINIs with their head lights and tail lights tinted. I was wondering if there is a big difference in being able to see at night with the lights on. Like, am I going to have to drive around with my high beams on? Am I going to get rear ended because no one can see my tail lights?

Would you wear sunglasses at night?

In my opinion reducing your night time visibility in any way, even if it is only 2%, is foolish. I admit that I do like the look of it on some cars, but how good does it look when you hit a deer or get a ticket?

Check your local laws, but I'll bet it is illegal to tint your headlights/tail lights in any way.

Sorry to all of you who have tinted lights, I love the look, but I don't like the idea.

I dont have any problem seeing at night with my lights tinted but I use my fog lights. I dont have my tail lights tinted because its illegal here in NC to cover your tail lights with anything.

I "tinted" my headlights and taillights with Lamin-x.(great product looks good and preforms a function) My last car i used UV nightshade which is like a see through spray paint . I didn't like how that faded over time. But with the Lanin-x you get to deside how much light will pass through (how dark do you want it to look) so you get to determin the level of light lost. With projector headlights you don't really lose much visibility though. This is real important though " Can you see when it is dark? Will you be doing ALOT of night driving? Do you live in the contry or city? Form vs. Function? " I say do it i can see fine at night even with the lights off. Ps i have NEVER recieved a ticket for my headlights just my window tint (7%).

You can do the joey-mod and not lose any light output. Search this forum for joey and you'll find it.

I plan on doing it this summer.

I know it's illegal here in NY but I have seen a bunch of cars with their tail lights tinted. I haven't gotten a ticket for my window tints, which are at 5%, and I've been pulled over for speeding twice.

I don't have the Xenon lights, is the "Joey Mod" still possible?

Fog lights aren't really intended to help you see, they are designed to help people see you.

Yeah the joey mod is still possible even with out xenons just look up ghosthound's joey mod thread on 2gen mods/exterior. Just do it drewster you will never regret it (unless you get a ticket) and if you do decide to do the lamix route its reversible.

And you are already familar with your local police. If you are really woried about rear visability then get a 3rd light pulsar kit. That thing is so easy to install.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. I think I might end up doing that.

I got both tickets within the last couple of weeks, I just moved to the other side of NY. The first one (23 over) got "dismissed" for some reason... I'm hoping that the second one does too haha.

Please don't do it! My daughter tinted her MC's taillights. I followed her one day and found that her brake lights looked like the taillights of a car with headlights on. In other words, ridiculously reduced in visibility! I don't think it's a great idea, legal or otherwise, in an already vulnerable car.

But, it's your neck, and your tickets...

Might not have been a problem following at night, but it's the pits in day time...

P.S., Brandon, I was following Michelle. Know her?

Thanks Brandon, you're the coolest. I really like the pulsar too.

Are your tints considered "smoked" or something else? They look so dark in the daytime.

Thank you. I went with Charcoal - Deep Dark Tail Light Covers on the rear and went with the Smoked - Smoked Tail Light Covers on the headlights and fogs. Then i did the joey mod underneath and would of took the lamix covers off but i need to redo some of the painting and there is never enough time in the day.

Here's Michelle in her wheels:

And here she is ON her wheels:

Sorry the top one is so big--I can't tell you how many times I did the Photobucket thing to resize it! Oh well, she's a cute kid, if I can say so. Sorry, guys, she's taken--by her Checkmate Edition hubby. BTW, her handle on Metroplex is Topless Blonde. Refers to the car, though, right? That's what she tells me, anyway.

Michelle is the reigning Ms. Wheelchair America. She drives, and autocrosses, her MC with hand controls. Go on their website for more details.

My tint guy has his tail lights and headlights tinted by his auto body guy who puts a small amount of black paint mixed with clearcoat and it smokes them out. They look fantastic and he barely loses any visability. I was thinking of doing it myself.

Each to their own, but having ridden motorcycles for many years and now driving a MINI - each of which apparently is invisible to many people - I prefer to be seen rather than look good. CONSPICUITY is the keyword.

I installed fog lights and wired them to my tail/brake lights and added a thrid brake light pulsar and I don't plan to lose any visibility by tinting them no matter how good it might look.
