My Plasti-dip adventure

I guess I've had too much time on my hands this week, also had a can of plasti-dip in my hands. After figuring out that if it did not turn out well I could easily remove it, I decided to go for it

So far I've done the grill surround, headlight rings, taillight trim rings, gas cap door, and side scuttles. Maybe tomorrow I will get the beltline covered in vinyl. As for the door handles .....I'm not sure how I will do them yet, gotta think about that one.
I dont really like the black around the headlights so I'll change that too red when the paint gets here.

Any suggestions on the wheels? Wife thinks they should also be black.

Here is a Pic of the progress so far:

I like the progress!!!

FYI pastidip comes in red too, if you want to try that out on the rings first (it's a little darker/duller than the Chili red though so i might look too weird)

If you do the wheels just make sure they're verrrrrrry clean first.

Check out this thread:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...out-party.html

Hard to navigate the huge file photos they put in, but nice B4 and after photos.

And although I don't believe PD was used on the body parts, but they painted their S-Lites w/flat black paint - and IMO did a nice job.

Very nice looking MINI BTW. Always liked the Red/Black/Black out - theme on the MINI.

I found the instructions somewhere on this forum. But here is how to remove the chrome cap.
1. Open the door (whoda thunk it)
2. Look in the back side, in the top there is a place where you can get a small screwdriver. Pry the tab down while turning the chrome cap counter clockwise it sorta unscrews about 1/8 of a turn. Very simple

I did the same to my CR/B earlier this week (minus the gas cap).

How does that plastidip handle stones and debris ? Headlight rings, grille surrounds... they'll take a fair amount of abuse. It's softer than chrome, so I'm thinking it won't look so hot after a year or so.

Not sure how it will hold up. BUT if it gets to looking like crap I can easily remove it. That's why I went with plasti-dip instead of paint, also if I get tired of the dark side I can always go back to the shiny side

Here it is, done on plasti-dip. The red "S" is the original, I taped it off before painting, it's not perfect but neither am I

Looks great !

I painted my side S vents with some simple flat black spray but its starting to chip off so i may try this Plasti dip

did you just paint over the chrome or remove the chrome first with some sandpaper or something ?

The nice thing about the Plasti dip is that you don't need to sand the chrome down. Just clean it up and dry it off. Spray 3-4 coats and you're good to go.

The only prep is to clean it, I used brake cleaner on a rag. spray the first coat light. Then follow with at least two more heaver coats......you really cant screw it up.

I dont know, but it will be easy to re-do. I removed it from my headlight rings over the weekend, first I tried to scrape it off with my fingers and it was tougher than I thought. Then I used a little mineral spirits and it quickly dissolved.

I painted my headlight rings the same color as the car and they look great, also applied some euro style racing stripes that I had made at a local sign shop. No pic's yet..............

What's the most reasonable way to get body colored headlight trim? Just take them to a body shop or is there somewhere out there that sells them pre-painted for a great deal?

I have a CR/CR MCS and I want my rings to be red to minimize the visual size of the headlights. Same goes for my tail lights. The only black I like is the grill and maybe door handles/gas cap (still undecided on that part).

Cheapest paint job would be a local store. Look at a ma 'n pa kind of parts store and someone there could probably point to a local guy. If not, try a local graphics design store(some will specialize in cars). The air brushers there will cost less since compared to air brushing graphics, painting the trims is easy(when it's off the car). They tend to be the cheapest. Quality of work however is dependent on the artist.
