joey mod on tail lights

I made a previous post about doing the 187 on my tail lights but didnt get a whole lot of feedback. I did hear use a Dremel to cut them open. Please....any of you guys that have done this mod help. How did you get your tail lights open and how did you put them back together? And did you have any problems afterward. I know I can cut them open but can you close them back up water tight? I was unsuccesful opening my headlights so I used vinyl over the lens. I cant use dark tint on tail lights in NC and dont want to use the ruby red vinyl. So I really have to do this thing to get rid of that chrome ring .

I used a dremel and cut them all the way around. After that you have to take the insides apart, which isn't too difficult.

To put them back together I used a plastic epoxy that I bought at home depot, and then I put a layer of silicone over that once it was dry. So I have two layers of protection and I haven't had any issues with water/moisture yet.

Hope that helps.

I had a pair of black euro taillights from Moss on my old MINI. They were horrible. The lenses would crack and I had to send them back twice. The next time they cracked, I figured I'd experiment with them. I used a knife and a heat gun on one slowly cutting away the adhesive and then using the heat gun to kind of help seperate it, and that worked well. It was just time consuming. It can be done, the key is patience. Don't rush.

I would take Notfunky's advice and use the epoxy to close it up, but use it sparingly, and make sure you get a good seal with the silicon. You can also get epoxy from Wally world.

Thanks to all you guys for the feedback. I bought a extra set of used tail lights from a NAM seller for $69 so if I messed up it wouldnt matter. Used a Dremel on a small section...just enough to get a butter knife in. With two butter knives prying end over end I got the first one open in 30 minutes second one in 25. Cleaning off old glue this job is gonna take some time. If it works out I'll do my other set and put'em up for sale. I'll post pics later
