How do you remove the ring around the shifter boot?

I've got a rattle coming from under the shift boot and would like to pull it up and take a look. How do I take it off?

Thanks

Just grab on the inside of the ring with two fingers on each side and pull straight up.

I use my nails to get under the lip and then pry slowly up on one side and then the next ! The prongs that line the ring in place are very delicate and could easily be broken if you pull or twist it out to hard.

+1 straight up. Angles are a bad idea.

Just for completeness, there are 4 prongs that form a square pointing toward the front of the car, so they are at 45, 135, 225 and 315 degrees.

They differ in diameter, so the ring only goes on one way. Some of the prongs are thin...

PS: make sure all pins line up before re-installing ! You will know what I am talking about after you remove it....

I'll just say this now, if the rattle was not caused by this ring before you removed it, after you put it back you might have a new rattle to contend with.
