Interior/Exterior Powder Coating 101
I've had the process of powder coating explained to me in very general terms years ago. I have questions that I'm sure some of you can answer.
Which is preferable: Painting or powder coating (pc) calipers?
Can parts that flex be pc'd? Example would be springs or sway bar.
Do parts need to be stripped before pc'ing?
Can one pc over pc?
Are all colors avaialable? I'm considering Gold, is that an option?
THOSE OF YOU IN TEXAS, SPECIFICALLY THE DALLAS AREA
Where in the DFW area can one have a good pc job done?

Powder coating is usually not a 'home' job, it is usually done at a professional powder coating specialist using professional tools. The process involves using either elastrostatic charge or heat to get the powder to stick to the part, and then having it baked to harden the coating. You can re-powder coat, but surface prep would be very important since suface changes will be magnafied by the coating. It is a fairly durable coating and is commonly used on many aftermarket parts and even things like football face guards. Parts can flex to a point, I beleive many springs and sway bars are Powder Coated.
If you want to paint your calipers, I would recommend using a paint from G2 or one of the other two part systems that are suitable for high heat applications. You could probably have your calipers painted by a professional powder coater but you would have to remove them and seal off any openings as the parts are actually dipped in powder that is 'fluffed' with compressed air from the bottom of a suitable container (or sprayed using a charged process).
Heres a good product for painting calipers:

Thanks for the response, hope I didn't give the impression I want to do this myself. I've got enough half done projects scattered about the house, garage, yard, waist line......etc

don't PC the calipers. too much work to bleed and clean everything up and put new seals in. use the G2 kit as was said.
you have to strip parts before PC. a nice glass bead is good. your PCer will have a blast place he/she uses or will have one in house. ask them about it.
yes you can PC over PC. but still a clean surface is best.
You can do any part that is meatal. springs and sway bars are easy parts to do and they will last a long time and look nice if you PC them.
most places have any color you want. some colors come out a bit different than the color chip after all is done due to heat and how many coats they apply (ie: yellows). but they should be able to do gold. and normally the more you get done at one time the cheaper it is. but also the morre times you change colors will cost more
good luck
