psh teaser.
There are always things!!
there's a spray aerosol called Plastidip from Lowe's/ home depot etc. It's a matte black rubberized coating. I've had my grill done for a couple weeks now, and, at the moment, my headlight/taillight rings are drying their second coat. it works great; no sanding or priming. iT'S REMOVABLE IF YOU DONT LIKE IT (peels right off but won't chip from driving). im gonna do my beltline, door handles, side markers (except S), and gas cap today. (now i just have to joey mod).

They have it here in spray cans of many colors.....

There is a thread here on de-chroming the MINI, and apparently this stuff is fairly resistant to chips, scratches and dings, and sprays on evenly, coats well.....

It figures you're a Red Sox fan
DuvinClunk: What I think he's trying to say, at least the first part of the quote above his comment, is that there are other colors available other than black. However that only leads me to believe that he failed to read the other 7 pages of comments on here where it was mentioned several times about the choices of colors. The second part about "apparently this stuff is faily resistant to chips, etc." well I dont get that at all. Looks like he did his own discovering of Plasti-Dip without reading all 8 pages of this thread.
Oh well, I guess you can say he was generous for sharing his discovery with the rest of us....too bad he's WAY too late on it

But I think he's right...there is a thread around here somewhere about de-chroming with such "pasti-dip"...just gotta find it....

Check out what I just Plasti-Dip'd

Oh, BTW, one of my headlight rings took a good shot from a rock or something, and the plasti-dip did flake off in a spot. The good thing though is that it did not damage the chrome underneath!

Hey how hard of a job is it to replace the door handles? I just need to do my passenger side
Its not too hard if you have the right tools (like any repair basically). Door panel comes off very easily and there are several how-to's on here. Once you get the panel off you need to use a tool like this:
click on link to go to the site. Once you get the inner screw out, the outer can be reached by removing a little rubber plug from the door shell and then a normal ratchet with extension, u-joint and allen head socket. The two screws that hold the handle onto the door have an allen head in it so you can attack them with the allen head socket attached. I thought that they had a hex head on the outside of them too but I can't remember now. Hope this helps. Like I said there are how-to's with pictures to help you get a better idea but once you get the panel off and look up at the handle you'll see what I'm talking about.

Ive got 4 coats. Just seems to be holding weakly around the rubber around the handle. We'll have to see...
Oh man, just found this thread. Finally something a mod novice like me is capable of doing!! And it's great that you can buy this stuff from Home Depot. (I have like 5 of them all around me) From all that I've read about this thread so far...
To Plastidip Gas Cap:
-Remove one screw.
-Wipe down with alcohol.
-Plastdip 3 to 4 heavy coats letting each coat dry before reapplying.
To Plastidip door handles:
-Use 3x5 index cards to insert in slits.
-Use newspaper/garbage bags to cover rest of the area.
-Clean with alcohol.
-Plastidip with 3-4 heavy coats.
Just to clarify... when it comes to masking tape...what kind of tape do you use? I was wondering if I could use the 3x5 index card method, and then use blue painters tape and tape garbage bags around the area. Would blue painters tape go ok on the car's paint itself? Or is there something else I should use?
Here are my questions regarding:
Side Emblem:
Paulie what is your method of plastidippin' the side emblem (turn signals). I like the way the Red S is still there, how was that done. Did you have to remove the chrome piece? Or did you just use masking tape on the Red S and covered the area and just sprayed right on the car?
Headlights:
I'm a bit uncomfortable about removing the headlight rings, but I can try since it sounds like a basic nuts and bolts job. But I was wondering if you sprayed 3-4 heavy coats on the rings...would they still fit on the car? Would it be too snug or just fine?
Going to get a can of this stuff tomorrow and work on the gas cap. Wish me luck.

^^^^ the headlight rings will fit just fine. You just want a few coats on the underside, but it's the top side (part that shows) that you want the most coats. The HL rings are held on by some clips so they take care of the perfect fit, not the HL ring itself
oh and blue should be fine. I know I always just use the cheapest roll at walmart (tan stuff)

Hey thanks for the help.
I was really apprehensive to do the headlight rings as well. I figured that if the tabs broke I would just use industrial double sided tape to keep them on. I ended up not breaking any tabs and they came off in less than 5 mins.

Headlights took my like 30 minutes for the first one to figure out how to get off. The 2nd one took like 5 minutes. there are 3 bolts if I remember correctly, then use pliers to squeeze the black hose where the line comes in for the headlight washers (if you have this feature). Be careful with the headlight ring clips as well. Just take your time and you'll be ok
