cool thanks for the tips. i'm going to work on the more complicated ones over the weekend, i'm gonna work on the gas cap tonight.

 

gas cap's a piece of cake. 1 tip: try to get it elevated (like set the gas cap on the spray paint cap) so the edges aren't sitting and adhering to what you are spraying over.

Just removed gas cap. Prepping the area (my floor!!) and cleaning the cap w/alcohol. Will upload pics... in a few...

question: how long do you wait before applying another coat? the can says 30 minutes. Is 30 min. adequate?

Mine said 4 hours. I waited 4 hours between coats.

 

yeah on the can it says, do another coat after 30 minutes. but it takes 4 hours to dry before use.

 

Well I must have been too excited and read it too fast. Still turned out great with 4 hours drying time!

 

so I just did the third coat... it looks a bit like there's small pits/dots on it. Will it smooth out when it dries?

 

Had those. It didn't smooth out. Are you laying it on really thick?

Don't hold back. You can always rip it off. Lay it thick.

 

third layer dried. the pits are barely noticeable. just added the 4th layer (THICK) it's ultra smooth and should dry that way.

for some reason on my second try from a fresh start. even the first coat looks a bit pitted like pores... could it be the spray nozzle?

 

Sounds familiar. Welcome to the world of finding the delicate balance between too light and too thick. You'll get it and it'll look great...

 

When I did my gas cap I laid two light layers and noticed a very rough texture like sandpaper. Third coat laid it on thick and turned out having a very smooth rubber coating. Thick is the coat but a controlled thickness. I tried doing my side repeaters the other day and got a little carried away with the coats and ended up having very think runs with giant holes in it so tomorrow I'm going to peel it all off and try again with a little more patience this time

how long do you guys usually let dry before applying another coat?

 

I've been a rattle can artist for a long time & here are my collected tips.

- Be patient. Many, many thin coats will always adhere, coat and look better than a couple thick ones. Think of it as dusting the surface repeatedly. Thin coats cure evenly, thick ones don't and will cause you pain later on down the road when they crack.

- Always buy at least 2 cans of paint. I'ts no fun to run out halfway through. If you are painting properly, you will use both cans.

- Don't get the can's spray tip any closer than 12 inches at a minimum. Remember, dust not glop the paint on.

- If you are spraying inside, open all your windows & wear a proper mask. No joke, this stuff will kill you. Most likely not today but lung cancer sucks. It is best to spray outside and still wear a proper mask.

- Follow the directions (+/-) 10 minutes as far as wait time between coats. If you are dusting the paint on really lightly, you can cut the wait times in half.

- Oh, and if you are sprayng inside. You can't mask off enough space. The paint will find any place you didn't and stick to it. So it's best to have a "paint room" or be prepared to clean paint of of every surface in the room. It's best to spray outside.

 

I was after a matte/flat finish so I did light coats...I shot every 15 minutes, and did a light dusting. Now when I shot it incorrectly, I had spots that ended up more shiney than the other areas.

 

After two attempts. It's all set and done and on the car. (Sorry if the car is dirty)

My tips for anyone doing this: Do 2 light coats and then 1 heavy coat. Spray atleast 12 inches away. Clean the spray nozzle.

I'll post pics of where the 4 bolts are located tomorrow. someone will probably beat me too it, though. I learned the hard way- I ripped off my stock scoop, then realized there were 4 bolts holding it in.
