Be that guy.....that mark V is a beautiful car and hardly gets laughed at considering how well his car has been received both at shows and by the euro community.
Though, on the MINI, doing the bumper would look kinda silly due to it's shape

Yah it has influences in the rat rod style of cars Many times the owner of these rusted new cars are part of the same group that show up in rat rods to the classic hot rod shows. They aren't as clean and restored as a nicely restored hot rod....but there is something about the character of the rust and the lifestyle of the rat rod crowd that is very respectable.
It's a rare aesthetic and many people don't "get" it, but it's a pretty common artistic philosophy......finding beauty in decay. There's a certain beauty and character to rusty cars etc....and some people are attemping to reach this same character on new cars. I'm not a huge fan of it on the newer cars...but I definitely respect and understand what they're doing so I have to give them props rather than resorting to "it's stupid". I definitely love the older rusty vehicles like rat rods and hoodrides.
The easiest analogy that I use to explain it is the concept of still wearing ripped/worn jeans because they look cool to some people. Rusting a new car is kinda like buying pre-ripped jeans....again, I'm personally not a fan, but I totally get why someone would want the worn look. And I'm sure some people think ripped jeans are stupid too
A lot of people are quick to jump on the "it's dumb" bandwagon....but the mod has a stable aesthetic philosophy as well as a lifestyle behind it, they're just a bit close minded to others' personal styling.
For a further look into the rusting thing....check out this thread. Lots of pictures to look at new and old : http://www.motoringunderground.com/f...highlight=ratz

i'm all about some rat rides and the simplicity of just driving what you have.
however, going out of your way to paint some "rust" on a 2005 car, is pretty dumb. maybe its a tribute, an homage if you will. i would think that the people who actually have gone out of thier way to find old and unique cars would be offended by how rusty the plastic front bumper is.

my 54 austin healy was just repainted in its original color, AH blue and to keep it original, it is incrediblt low gloss, its not flat but its not gloss, i love it. its a happy medium but i love the flat look as well. my opinion is if you have the time and patience and the paint isnt a custom color, go for it.

I guess its hard to understand like some of us original dubbers do (rally, konky, myself, etc). That car is so beautiful, from the whitewalls to the rust and roof rack. it just screams one of a kind, but done right in so many ways...aka euro.

Great link full of sweet cars. But the best part… Tatted up punkabilly girls leaning on rusty rides. Does life really get any better than that?
