Interior/Exterior EZpass Placement
EZpass Placement
I just got my EZpass and stuck on my windshield as per the instructions, but it really sticks out like a sore thumb. I did a search and heard of people mounting on the rear sunroof successfully (on Gen I cars), but thought with an open sunroof, it might be a problem having to pass through two layers of tinted sunroof (I'm not sure but don't Gen I's front section not slide back?).
Anyone done this on a Gen II? Other ideas for making it less visible?
I was thinking of just taping a piece of black paper to the front surface (can't paint it because they frown on altering the device).
If it makes a difference, mine comes from PA Turnpike. I also have a nav system, and sunroof mount would put it closer to the GPS receiver (more potential problems).
Since PA is a no front plate state, a bumper mount unit would be equally unappealing.

I used black duct tape on it one time. I've got it mounted in the rear roof of my car...no issues with it working even with the front section open. you'll still need some tape on it so it's not visible through the glass
Well, based on the suggestion of others in a Dallas forum, I just mounted mine on the windshield behind the state inspection sticker. Works perfectly and it cannot be seen from outside the car.
Originally I tried the rear roof mount on my R56 but at some of the older tollbooths the reader could not read it up there. It did work for all of the newer overhead readers though.

Never thought about moving my ezpass, but now I will. I'm going to try the rear sunroof mount. I just requested new fastener strips.
Reading these forums gives me too many ideas.

Thanks,
I just requested new strips too. I'll leave the ones on my windshield for awhile just to make sure I'm okay. And for the number of times I go through a toll, I can just shut my sunroof to avoid any problem.

Yeah Jas same here. both Mini's mounted back there and no problems on either. Pa. or Jersey
Where exactly do y'all mount it on the rear sunroof? Will it work tucked under the front edge of the rear sunroof beneath the non-clear black-border portion of the glass? (What do you call that border - tint, vinyl?) It would be a very stealth location there. Invisible to the passenger and bystander. Is that where everyone is tucking it away?

Mine works fine sitting on my dash... I just sit it on a non-slip pad that I bought as cracker barrel.
I've always thought about stripping it down to just the circuit board and mounting it just below the dash, (or as far up as I could get it by reaching up from behind the knee bolster).

). I can't imagine a MINI owner being able to keep one in place unless it's parked.

WoooHoooo
No email for me yet. :impatient
Let us know how your install goes. I'm still worried if it will work everywhere in New York and New Jersey, but after you started this thread, the EZ-Pass is looking more and more like a large zit on the face of my mini.

Never flew off the sticky pad once on the dragon! That road has a few turns on it and I'm not a slow driver.
If they mail me more than one set, I'll forward a set to you, if you don't hear back from them.
This may explain why sunroof placement works so well. I always thought the sensor was somewhere around eye level.
Prestige Mini in NJ has a neat alternative for you (and maybe this is available elsewhere, but I looked and this was the only place I found it). You can get a few different decals that go on the front windshield and face outward (mine is black with LET'S MOTOR on it). Then you attach the velcro strips of the EZ pass to it, so it hides the pass from view and just looks like you have a neat, Mini-related decal on your windshield. I saw it on another NJ Mini owner's car, asked where he got it and then did the same. To get an idea, go take a look at these photos I posted on 8/25/07 to this thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=111722
I got my EZ-pass stips in the mail and tried sticking them to the rear sunroof window in the very front left edge, but it didn't stick very well. Inpatient
, I ripped of the fastener strips and just used some double-sided tape.
Tested it at the Triborough toll-both. I was nervous since the booths are staffed by cops.
Went without a hitch. Now my EZ-pass is stealthily installed. Can't see it at all from the outside or inside.
I went ahead and ripped of the windshield strips as well before further trials. I'm this way with popping zits on my face as well. Now my mini almost has a clean face, except for the LightInSight and the less visible radar detector.

Used my EZ Pass for the first time today. Left it on the windshield just to make sure it worked before moving it. So tomorrow it goes on the sunroof. The strips they used are identical on both sides (not like velcro) so I only need one pair, and I'll have a spare in case I screw up.
