STAINLESS FUEL DOOR COVER

I searched everywhere for a chrome fuel door/cover for my MC S Cabrio, but couldn't find one. So, I made one; using mirror finish stainless steel.

I couldn't get the pic to upload to this thread, so I posted it in my gallery. I couldn't get a good picture because everything in the background reflects off the mirror finish.

Take a look and let me know what you think...

interesting mod, here's your image from your gallery:

some people have replaced the cooper flap with the S flap. it's not a flat flap like yours but it's an option for a stainless/chrome cap.

Thanks for moving the image for me.

The other cap is on my Miata. I'd like to switch it to my Mini, but it won't work.

If the stock one is metal then take it to a chroming shop (for all I know it could be plastic - everything else that is chromed seems to be). To find a chroming shop look for middle aged men riding brand new Harleys with brand new boots, hats, chaps, and tats and ask them.

This isn't possible on cabrios because there isn't enough clearance for the different door mechanism. Even MCSC from the factory has the flat body colored fuel door.

LOL. I'm well past middle age, but I still ride a chromed out '96 Nostalgia Softail Harley...however, my gear is well worn.

Buddy, my Jack Russell terrier, is standing over his latest kill..a Georgia rat. He has slain 3 large snakes and numerous squirrels, chipmunks, and frogs. There's a thread here that compares the aggressiveness of a JR to a MC.

I have enough stainless steel to make several more. I have a friend who owns a Motorcycle shop, so I have access to his tools. I spent most of a day working on the lid. The biggest headache was forming the cover to fit right. The OEM lid looks flat, but it has a slight curve, so I had to play around with the cover for a while to get it to fit snugly. Matter of fact, I'm still not totally satisfied with the fit. I used two way tape to secure it to the lid.

I thought of putting drive screws (I didn't know what they were called) around the edge, but decided not to because of the lip.
Also, I bought a MC Tax Disc Holder on eBay (Great Britain)...when it gets here, I'm gonna see if it looks good on the cover..I think that the disc holder is 3 1/2" in diameter, and has a MC emblem on it. The OEM lid is 5 1/2", so I don't think I can center the disc holder because of the lip.

I'm willing to make a couple more, but I don't have any idea what the value would be. I guess you could let me know what you're willing to pay.

Thanks for the compliments. My next project will be to try to make seatbelt holders using 1/2" thick aluminum.

I did a lot of bending and fitting first; then I attached it with double sided tape. It's available in auto part stores.

I checked my 02 non-cabrio and it definitely looks like its metal. So if people are interested and their doors are metal (not plastic) you could achieve the same look by polishing the metal and throwing a clear coat over it.

I also guess you could buy a metal one from the dealer and just polish that one instead of trying to bend and cut your own shape and stick it on.

If you're not sure, stick a small magnet on the lid. I've polished metal, but have never gotten the shine that compares to the shine on mirror finish stainless steel...The OEM plastic cover on my '06 is actually wrapped around black plastic...one could probably make a new cover from thin aluminum (like roof flashing), polish it, and do the wrap.

Thanks for letting me know! It was driving me crazy. Nice looking dog, my sister has debated getting one for years, ended up with pugs instead. Her last terrier pretty much dug up her entire yard by himself.

Your sister probably made a wise choice; unless she has snakes and rats!!

My parents have a Jack Russell. I remember when I was in college & he was a pup he would kill everything he could get his paws on. Nicest dog to people & fine with their cats, but everything else was fair game in that little brain. groundhogs, squirrels, birds, mice, moles, it was just non stop death & destruction in their yard. Then he tried to take down a skunk....he survived, but that stink stayed around for a long time.

Jack Russell

Ole Buddy is sitting right beside me now; in his personal chair by the window. If he spots a squirrel, dog, bird, or most anything that moves outside, he lets me know about it by barking; then running out his "doggie" door into the fenced yard to raise hell. He's crazy about people; very loving to our 7 mo. old granddaughter, but can turn into a fearless warrior in a split second. He has to be closed off when my wife runs the vacuum cleaner or when I run the lawn mower, because he attacks them....I could write a book about the little sucker!!
