I'm just saying, in general, if you want your paint to go on more evenly, you should use a primer to smooth it out when adding the new base.
??? the guy im refering to is "bettie" with the all black MINI on the first page (he posted about 8 pics of his black slites)
he said his have been like that for like 1.5 years and theyre still holding up strong.

My wheels were painted in this same fashion! No primer. It also went on looking somewhat like that with white splotchyness. After the paint had cured and the wheels had be washed a few times they were perfectly matte black!
Primer would help, but if the original silver was lightly sanded without removing the paint clear down to the aluminum the paint should adhere okay. The eveness does have a lot to do with maintaining the spray consistly as you come onto and pass off of the area being sprayed. Don't stop in the middle on the surface.
I went with a clear laquer over the black, also laquer. Mine have held up into the second summer with the exception of the ocassional scratch. I did repolish before summer came.
You guys must be animals though. Mine took me all winter to clean, prep, paint, rub, polish and wax. I figured around 100 hours altogether. Fortunately, it was winter and I have a winter set of wheels.
Still, y'alls are looking nice.

MSRP $390.52 on sale for $244.08 to be precise! I paid about about $80 less than that. But they look and sound so sweet!!!!!
If you are using spray cans instead of a spray gun it is going to be very hard to get a perfect paint job.
And yes you should primer them. It gives the paint a better base to stick to.
Even with a spray gun those wheels aren't easy to paint with all of the curves on them. I speak from experience.
A friend of mine who has a body shop also recommends you add a hardner to the paint to make it more durable.
Adding clear is not necessary, it just depends on what look you want.
However clearcoat does give you a protective layer over the basecoat.

Those wheels look terrible, bad paint job.
Don't put on a heavy coat of primer, just enough to cover.
ya his do look crappy.
i googled "duplicolor high performance wheel coating write up" and probably 90% of them arent using primer. i dont know if i should or not. ive heard that the primer will make the color look funny.
