Newbie has pre-purchase questions about some exterior options

Hi there --

First post ever here on the forum. I am centimeters close to ordering an S and am doing a bunch of research on some options, as far as feasibility of doing them ourselves. From what I read so far on the forum, if I want mudflaps, it's a relatively easy thing to do. Does anyone have a picture of what the mudflaps look like on a car? The other ones I'm wondering about are:

1. Checkered mirror caps and rear view mirror? From what posts I saw, it shouldn't be too tough? True?

2. Driving lamps? I'm talking about the stock ones from Mini. How hard are they to install?

3. Last one is a question about the roof rack. I heard they no longer have to drill into the roof to install the racks on the 2007's. If this is true, I'm assuming you don't need a dealer to install it, right? It would just be like any other Thule or Yakima rack that you can take on and off?

Thanks for the info! I'm searching through the archives and man, there is a ton of info. But thought I'd ask in any case.

Kathy,

Hi, I'm relatively new to the forum myself and if you haven't ordered your MINI yet, I would like to say that I purposefully purchased mine as stripped as possible. There are so many aftermarket choices that it doesn't make sense to spring in advance. This is just my humble opinion.

I think half of the fun is learning about our cars and how to make them better. Good luck and even though I'm new here too, welcome.

definitly do the mirror caps yourself: there is a great how-to guide herehttp://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?s...l&titlesonly=0
also I found them the cheapest here http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...egoryID=102596

this is my next mod when I get my car back next week

Thanks, Charlie, for the welcome and Chili for the link! One thing I read on the Morristown Mini website is that if you have the universal garage door opener in your rearview mirror, you can't put a cap on it. As you said, the outside mirror caps sound pretty easy to do, but I don't recall if any of the packages have the garage door opener. Will have to check. The way it's looking now, I'll probably put several packages on it but wave the options and just do them either ourselves and in piecemeal fashion. Amazing how all those options add up, especially with dealer install!

The OEM lights can be installed by the DIY mechanic in the R56. There are a few areas that you may need help on because the directions really suck.

I did find a bunch of information, including this doc: http://www.motoringfile.com/howto/Dr...Lights_902.pdf.
I'm wondering if it is any different in the 2007?
