I removed the entire fire wall piece, used a larger diameter intake tube, and cut a nice big hole in the hoodimpatient:impatient Seems to work well, no problem with water, and the sound is big big big

i dont know how it would look, but what if you put some sort of hood over the back part of that hole. Maybe make it a ram style intake? It would be interesting to see if it helped push more air into the area around the filter; Or if it would negatively hurt the air flow coming past the filter from the radiators???

Could you just completly leave out the rear partition? What the point of putting it back if you have a cold air intake?

Here I go again.
The intake for the heater and vent system draws air in through the cowl area. Leaving this open allows heat and under hood fumes directly into the cabin area.

Cone Air filter

I have looked and looked for a aftermarket air filter to sit in the oem airbox. The only one that I can find that fits is the one from mini-mania is that right? Is there not a K&N filter that will fit? I am wanting to do this mod but with out a cone filter I am not able to do it. That is right isnt? thanks for the help guys

I bought a Unifilter from Way Motor Works and it fits in the stock box.

is this worthwhile on a non-S car...on other car forums people have piped this up about a drilled airbox..however lots of people have said it's bad because it disrupts the airflow...so instead of the air going directly from pipe to pipe it edies about inside the box..which is bad...so i've read

At the risk of sounding lazy, do you think this could be done without removing the entire intake system? If i remove just the foam filter i feel like there might be enough room to get in there and do the drilling.

It's possible to do, but there are brake lines behind the panel that you really don't want to hit with your drill....

This guy seems to have it figured out pretty well:

I'm going to pull mine out and do something like he did.

It's not hard to get the panel off

and then there's no risk fo messing with a hard to replace brake line. But why mess with all the little holes? Just cut a BF'in hole in the back and use weatherstrip to seal the space between the air box and the cowl panel.

Thats brilliant, what is the filter attached to? Looks like some plumbing parts... What size and where did you buy it? I too want to ditch the Alta metal box and put the OEM airbox back on.

Thanks!

Sorry to hijack the thread but a K&N cone will work with the stock air box. Just go to the K&N website and size a universal filter. I did an RU-3130 - 4.625" big end, 3.5" small end, 7.0" long, 3.5" flange for a JCW air box.

Mine:

My favorite thing about the JCW air box - a grommet exists between the air box and the baffle but there's no matching hole.

reopen old thread.

why not make many small holes? as small holes will have greater area then few large holes in a confined location. spread out the airflow more evenly, might in fact look really nice.

Been done.click here
Wasn't a good idea then, isn't now.
Think of a salt shaker. How big would the lid on a salt shaker have to be to flow as much salt as a shaker with the lid off altogether?
Turbulent air will stack around each small hole and lose flow proportionally greater than one large hole of equivalent circumference.
