How To DIY: PCV Change

DIY: PCV Change
What is a PCV?
Taken from Wikipedia:
A crankcase ventilation system is a way for gases to escape in a controlled manner from the crankcase of an internal combustion engine.
This is necessary because internal combustion inevitably involves a small but continual amount of blow-by, which occurs when some of the gases from the combustion leak past the piston rings (that is, blow by them) to end up inside the crankcase.
I like to change mine on all our vehicles about once a year. The R53 PCV comes in 2 styles, with and without a bolt into the valve cover. The non bolt type threads itself into the valve cover. I have the latter. The dealers here in Southern Ontario sell it for more than I care for so I sourced out the exact same item from the local Dodge dealer (part #: 04693369AA) and paid only $11. American dealers sell it for less, obviously.
Tools required: 24mm wrench.
Anyhow, onto the actual install (approx 2 minutes).
Locate the PCV:
- Remove the hose by pulling it back slowly, if it sticks use your thumb and index finger to loosen it by gripping and twisting and then try pulling it back slowly again.
- With the hose off, use the 24mm wrench to loosen the PCV valve. Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey.
- Install new PCV in reverse order, hand snug the PCV and then use wrench to go another 1/8 turn, anymore and it may crack the housing of the valve.
Happy Motoring!
