Hey gang,

Got a new addition to the stable here... a '66 Austin Mini Cooper S that we'll be picking up tomorrow. It's got great potential, and we're very happy to have found another old one out here on the Island. There's only one problem though - we're out of space!!!

I'll be selling the 1971 Mini (998cc) to help finance the project. We're going to ask what we paid for the car, as we've put several thousand dollars into it. We'd love to see it stay here in Hawaii and are going to make sure that it goes to a good home and not some knucklehead.

I have a friend that I promised first right of refusal on the car, so if he turns it down it'll be up for grabs. Here is a brief rundown of what's there:

1971 Mini (titled as a 1965 - possible re-shell, but the majority of the parts are '71).

Exterior:
It's red with white bonnet stripes and a Union Jack vinyl decal on the roof. We have Wood & Pickett style arches (fender flares) with ROH "Contessa" wheels (10" by 6&quot. The wheels have brand new, 0 mile Yokohama A008s on them (165/70 r10). Outside, the car has a set of spotlamps on the front bumper and the older "script" style badging on the rear.

Interior:
Center binnacle 3 clock "classic" layout. Water temp, oil pressure, and Spedometer / gas gauge. It has an aftermarket tachometer attached to the steering wheel column. The dash is a Rokee wood style dash with 2 "doors" (I hesitate to call them glove boxes, as it just covers the parcel shelf behind it.) The car has what I believe are the original vinyl seats, with a bench in the rear. The seats (tan) aren't bad, but they're vinly - nice and hot at times out here in Hawai'i. The headliner is in good condition but shows overspray from when the previous owner painted the car. The carpet (tan) is decent, but should probably be replaced. The steering wheel is from Mounteny and is (I think) an 11" variant.

Engine:
998cc A-series with remote type shifter. Stock.

The car runs well and stops decently despite the 4 wheel drum brakes. Up front it's got the twin leading shoe design and the rear is a single shoe setup. It has roughly a 5 gallon tank (nice and cheap to fill up, even with 92 octane). The engine leaks a bit of oil out the bottom end...but that just helps keep the engine and the subframe from rusting.

The body has a few spots where you can see some bubbling under the paint, but I haven't found any rusty areas yet. Actually - this car is in much better shape cosmetically than this '66 S that we're getting.

I have a set of 7.5" Cooper S disk brakes that I might be willing to part with if you would like to purchase them as well. Be warned though - those brakes go for about $1,000 new and we got ours for around $550. Discs would *really* improve the stopping though! If you're interested I'm sure we can work something out.

I have a spare 1275cc A+ engine, but I seriously doubt that I'm going to part with it. That might be my "big torque monster baby eating" motor

So - feel free to contact me here on NAM or (preferably) at my e-mail address listed in my profile.

We really, really want this car to go to a good home. You gotta promise to drive it and enjoy it

Any questions?

-Andy

Thank you for posting this classic which we have grown to love.

What is the rough HP rating for engine?
How many miles do you have on the car?
What exhaust is on it now (What no cherry bomb)?
What kind of gas mileage do you get?
Do you have to be 6'7" tall to drive it with authority?

I think the car has something like 30 rbhp.

Andy,

Did you buy Philip Marcus' S? What happened to the other S you have?

From what I recall, Philip's car was "just" a Mini. Granted, he has a 1380cc engine in it so it really moves out  No - didn't buy that one.

We've still got the 1964 Cooper S. It's going to be restored eventually!

The '71 has roughly 40ish horsepower, so <insert guess here> is going to the wheels. I believe it makes about 60lb/ft of torque.

Without going allllllll the way outside  I believe it has 78,000 miles on it. Not too bad for a 30 year old car. From what we can tell it is on it's first trip around the clock too.

As for gas mileage - if it's tuned up properly, it's not unusual to get 45+ MPG in a 998cc motor. With Andy driving it's considerably less. For some reason I think the loud pedal has only "on / off"

Back to Philip's car - I don't know what happened to it. I know he was trying to sell it, but I haven't talked to him in quite a while.
