RallyCross in Hawaii SCCA (KRP and Kualoa Ranch)

In Rallycross there are three classes for FWD.
Stock, Prepared, and Modified.
You are modded so you can't do stock class.
Prepared allows for suspension and some mods and various wheels and tire sizes but no changes to boost.
You have increased boost so very likely you would be Modified class which allows extensive weight lightening.
Keep the stock suspension if you can and consider some rally wheels in something that will fit over your brake calipers but still give lots of grip in loose stuff, dirt or gravel.
Here are some tires I'd like to use- (Hankook Rally tires for loose gravel)
In this shot you can see my winterforce front tires
I'll move these to the rears and put the knobby tires on the fronts. 15x6 rims

Hankook Gravel Rally tires R201 comes in various compounds
G3 - Hard & Rough Gravel, Over 85º F
G5 - Medium Hard Gravel, 60ºF-95ºF
G7 - Soft & Loose Gravel, Under 70ºF ( This may be too soft a rubber and is easily cut or damaged by rough terrain)
Sizes very limited
185/60-15
195/65-15
They offer a bit more aggressive tread for mud and loose gravel and rocks
Some additional choices for Rally tires (UK source)
Silverstone S525M Mud Rally Tire, About $150 each, Directional tread
Features an open block type tread pattern which makes it ideally suited for muddy conditions in rallying or rallycross.
Size
15/60-15 fits 15x 5.5" perfectly but rims 5-6.5" wide are OK. Tire diameter is 605mm or just under 24".
Or
Silverstone S525 Rally tires, Directional and Asymmetric tread pattern
Size 15/62-15 fits 15x 5.5" perfectly but rims 5-6.5" wide are OK. 620mm tire diameter slightly taller than stock but OK. About $150 each

Some other tire choices.
Prices vary.

Some only come in certain wheel sizes. 15" wheels seem about right for the MINI if it can clear the front brakes.

Close race this week
Event 3

1. Subaru WRX Sti 5:47.58 First overall out of 10 total drivers
( Best single run 1:04.44)
2. Subaru WRX 6:04.76 Second overall, second in class
( Best single run 1:03.06)
Modified FWD
1. MINI cooper S 6:07.37 Third overall, 1st in class
( Best single run 1:07.44)
Prepared FWD
1. Toyota FX16 6:22.41 Fourth overall, 1st in class
( Best single run 1:09.25)
Modified AWD
1. Subaru Impreza RS 6:26.27 Fifth overall, 1st in class
( Best single run 1:11.29)
Stock FWD
1. Honda Civic 6:43.79 10th overall, 1st in class
( Best single run 1:08.38)
The top two Subarus are running Hankook Rally tires so they are way ahead of the rest of us but I try to keep pressure on them using just two front snow tires.

I thought we did really good for that event, no real weather problem all day long from 8 to 4pm. A little cloudy with some sun.
Tons of rain after but it was the next day.
Kapolei area is dry in general.
KRP is the most leeward area and the last to get rain.
We had a handful of spectators but mostly just friends of the drivers.
I think we are learning how to run the event pretty well and the few experienced SCCA people we have are making things happen,
We are hoping that some of the new drivers will come back for more and bring more drivers. We have a few repeats besides the core SCCA autocross bunch.

Some pictures from the last event-
Hard Charging fearless Toyota FX16
Stock FWD Civic with summer tires
Stock AWD Suzuki SX4 improving each run/event
Close to monster truck - driver still getting used to driving it
Running Snow tires up front on 15x6 rims
kicking up some dirt
Got my GoPro HD camera out for the first time.

Probably any cat back exhaust which likely is a straight pipe if they could do it.
No Rallycross for January, next date is Feb 2011

Event 4 Feb 19 was good.
22 drivers
I came in 3rd on raw time overall and first in class.

Had a good morning and was in 2nd overall but could not find any traction in the mud for the afternoon even with Rallytires on the fronts.

Big competition in Prepared AWD and Modified AWD
Since most have Rally tires now it's pretty tough to keep up if the course is more open.
Just have to be consistent and reduce errors.
Got 5th out of 18 on raw time. All of the other top 11 drivers had AWD
Had some of the better autocross drivers present driving Subarus.
Also had a Celica AllTrac with rally tires driven by three drivers that did well.

I have two threads on Rallycross going.
One in general Racing with basics on how to get started and what to expect.
And this one on how we are getting along in Hawaii.
I had a chance to talk to some of the other Rally drivers and the Toyota Celica Alltrac which was new at the last event is a great Rallycar. It's a backup car so people can sign up and drive it with permission from Davin K. It's got rally tires so it can be top 5 overall.
All the drivers for the Alltrac were new- first time out but still came in 6th 8th and 10th out of 18 on raw times. And 3rd, 5th and 6th out of 7 in class that included the top two drivers from the last events.
Also I looked at my videos of the event and saw many slow corners that I could have done much better on. Lots to keep working on for driving in the loose dirt or mud.
Cory and Ed in the MA class Subaru will not have the knobby tires for next event. They are sold to Mike in PA class and he traded his normal rallytires to Cory to get the better tires.
Update on tires is- all snowtires and all rallytires get chewed up worse than the R compound tires do at autocross. The ground is full of rocks and the runs are longer at about 70 to 80 seconds. The treads are full of damage. All season tires do OK.
