HAWAII - October SCCA Solo II at Hawaii Raceway Park
hmm. what yokohama model? a008R or a032R? the 205 size should be more than enough for a MC and almost enough for a MCS. i ran the kumho v700's on the MCS and the only time it slipped was when i fried them accelerating in the turns. they held good otherwise. i ran those exact tire sizes (on another car) of both of the yoko tires and they are good too. just make sure they are less than 2 years old and bagged if stored. b
Jeez... all you guys trying to "go small" with your wheels
165/70 r 10. Just called the TireRack and my Yoko A008s are on the way.
Now if my friggin wheel bearings would just show up...

>>Hmm, I must have the second lightest set of MC 15 inchers! I have a friend who has some tires for sale 205-50-15 Yokohamas, I think. Will those work on the MC in a stock class?
>>
So, which Yoks does your friend have? If there is some useful tread left, I would be very interested.
205/50 15 will work in stock class, in a MINI Cooper of course

aaaaarggghhhh (gnashing of teeth)
I have had my work schedule changed YET AGAIN, I am now working both this weekend and next! No SCCA Solo II for me! AGAIN! What is my world coming too??
If I don't get a chance to run Lucy through some slaloms and other fun stuff sometime soon, I'm gonna blow a gasket or something. The gate guards on military bases are not sympathetic at all about this, when I dance and dodge through the concrete barriers at base gates faster than, like, 5 mph.
(sigh) woe is me. Well, everyone have fun without me.

kencraig,
I have run the whole season in G-Stock street tire. I just complete the season and won the street tire class for the season. My first and only change was to change from the run flats to Kumho MX tires for more grip. I haven't found power to be a problem but wheels spin is a problem if you haven't fully rotated. My only change next season will be to get some AK 16 inch wheels and Falken Azenis tires. I plan to stay in street tire where there are more cars to race against. Make sure to take some lessons on racing a front wheel drive car. This was my biggest learning curve.
Good Luck
Autocross is a blast

>>Is an open face helmet good for the local Hawaii SCCA events as long as it is DOT and SNELL 2000 approved?
===>>>I requested one (open face) from Kenji @ Cycle City but he said that Snell "M" models all have full faces
. Nevertheless, my beautiful black HJC is solid
. Can't say that about my autocross skills though
ha ha ha See you there, kencraig!

truckeecollins. the g-stock class here is less defined here with no differentiation between street tires and auto x compound tires. only the STR and STS classes reflect the difference in tires. of course the tires have to have the tread depth and wear DOT approval, but as long as the tires fit under the fender on a stock equivalent rim with no more than 1/4" offset difference, there is no problem. so basically, for here, unless you wanna keep it "run whatcha brung" you might as well go with a tire that will not be an excuse and preserve your stock tires for daily driving. (if you can get an extra set of rims of course.) otherwise, the kumho MX's and falken azenis' are wonderful double duty tires that hold their own in performance and wear. the MX's are better in the wet from my experience.

erik and mini-t keep getting better and better.
on another note, a couple friends drove our EB MCS and got 6th and 8th place OVERALL. not bad, the track was downhill this time, so power was not the problem like last month(but then again, i never tried this time, had to focus on one car). the guy that usually takes GS again whined and whined and whined.
oh well. erik got a taste of power though.
he erik. i got a 52.xx then a clean 51.250 in the fun runs on an honest run with the guy that took 8th with the mini as my ride along. b

===>>>Yo, baronious! I was impressed a ton by your STI but more so impressed by your SKILLS
. Nevertheless, getting the jitters and getting some aggression out made everything worthwhile. I sweated like a pig (my apologies to Babe & his fellow pigs everywhere)...
*mini-t posted the top female time for those with less than ten years of experience -- way ta go, t!
P.S. Hey, I was at the board when that GS guy fussed & fussed about the MCS not being a stock mobile (per the turbo) ha ha ha
See y'all in November!

haha. he was trying to argue that the car didn't belong in GS. i told him look at tthe national results. if they change later, then they change, until then, stop crying. a stock MC could match his times easily. he was on the exact same tires too. he also said it was the car and that driver had little to do with it. haha. oh well. if he keeps complaining, i will take it to him and suggest we both drive the 2 cars and see who comes out on top. i will guess that i will take him by at least 2 seconds in each car. also got some inside info that his car is actually not legal for GS as his intake box has been modified(per the previous owner). haha. b
hey erik. how do your tires look now? did they wear correctly? b

Oh, I was pooped after my fourth run
. Funny how turning a steering wheel & pushing a pedal can do that, huh? Or, maybe that was just me
ha ha ha But it's certainly not like driving at The Fun Factory...

Congrats to the Hawaii MINI team for your outstanding work this week!
I've been talking to KeithY about going to autocross and maybe we can get more MCS out there.
KenCraig is also interested so we have team 2 in the wings.
Autocross is all about skill. Don't sweat the equiptment too much. If I bought a pro set of golf clubs and took a few lessons could I keep up with some good amatuers? Nope, not by a long shot.
Think skill and as a driver- think serious athletic endeavour. So think, eat, drink, sleep like an athlete.
Once you obtain the right skills then it is your physical training and mental sharpness that will take you to the next level. It's the same with many sports.
Tires- yes treat them well. Even a few runs on the track for less than a minute will chew them up. The useful life for autocross for a tire will vary but it is not as long as you think. That's why some people have dedicated track tires and then have a set of street wheels.
Congrats again- fine showing.

Yup - that's what I'd suggest. A protest. It's part of the sport, and if he wants to nit-pick about rules...well then, his stuff better be up to the rules as well!
actually, he isn't nitpicking. he is just crying that the MCS is classified in his car's class. bottom line is that he can't drive, and has been so used to winning his class that usually has no one else in it. look at his results. race tires, all wheel drive turbo car and still 42nd place overall after almost a year of racing with that car? maybe he should check himself before the car. the easy way to check yourself is to allow another person(top 10 overall) to drive it during the fun runs time to see if you are running the car to it's potential and to learn where and how you can improve. or at least have them ride with you. oh well. his complaining is a good distraction to my poor driving this past event. b
Hey MINI folks, I have a question ...
I will be going to the November SCCA Solo II (hopefully!) and will be running my MCS with the stock 17" runflats. So, all I gotta do when I get to the track is air up the tires? Or do I also have to remove the hubcaps?
And afterwards when I get home, I will probably need to rotate the tires?
Just curious ... never done this before.

You pick the air pressure. Front and back can be the same in the 33 to 38 psi cold range or mix and match how you please to affect understeer given the track conditions. It's OK to experiment. Ask Baronius for tips.
Your S-lytes have no hubcaps so nothing to remove. Some MINI wheels do have a plastic center hub cover-not a centercap. Those do get removed.
>>And afterwards when I get home, I will probably need to rotate the tires?
Rotate the tires? Probably not unless you have enough miles on your MCS to warrant rotation, maybe 5000 miles. Do you have that much? Look at the tire wear in the front and you be the judge if you see on the outer edges it is a bit worn which is what happens.
Solo II is only 4 runs each lasting about one minute long so hardly enough time to burn that much rubber on a stock runflat. You have been to the track/skid pad before back in July so there is some wear.
Be sure to walk through the course with Baronius to draw up a plan of attack then go for it.
