Does anyone notice your MINI Ping? I've been noticing while in my parking garage at work. Usually need to drive really slowely, with frequest stops on an incline...but its been doing it a lot. Could it be my gas? Should I have the software upgraded, again? Could it be because of the software upgrade?

Nope, I don't notice any ping. 12,000 miles so far ping free.

Could be your gas...

I've never noticed any pinging. I always use premium gas and usually keep the rpms up, but on those occasions in stop-and-go traffic, when I haven't *quite* stopped, and I don't want to bother with 1st gear, I've still never heard any pinging.

No Ping. No pong. No stumble. No hicup. No nasties of any kind after 18,000 miles and counting. It pulls fine from 1000rpm in any gear 1st through sixth. Try it see if yours will. June build in 2002 with no mods.

Motor on.

It matters not what it's called...just look at the octane number. Less than 91 = bad. 91 or higher = good.

For what it's worth, that's probably NOT the "middle one". Use the upper one.

jsun...you're speaking my language, baby!

Thanks for the help, folks. Probably what I'll try is changing gas and going for what jsun referred to as the "upper" one.

I read in the manual that I should use 91 octane, but a little birdie told me otherwise, and I trusted that little birdie.

Thanks again!

MINI's have some kind of a "ping" function if the octane rating is not high enough. My hubby put regular in by mistake & I definitly heard the "ping" Use premium & you'll have no problem.

Thanks everyone. I put my MINI to the ultimate test....I ran my gas down last night and put in the highest octane Chevron had to offer me (91 or 92....). I took it up Kilauea Avenue slow in D and no pinging. For those of you who don't know where Kilauea Ave is....all you need to know is that it is pretty steep. I'll try Wilhelmina Rise tomorrow.

thanks again!

watch out for those front-end scrapes! even without lowering springs, our mini's come stock low-rider already.

thanks, I took it easy coming down, but going up I had a blast. My main point was to try to replicate the pinging I heard with the "middle" octane gas. No matter how slow/fast I went up the street (D/SD or 1st gear), no pinging!

My work parking lot (the initial place I heard the pinging) was also a great, today.

No pinging....it was the gas!

Now...I think it's about time we put this thread to rest.

Thanks everyone!
