Track Prep for GP

For those that track their GP, what have you done to improve cooling, braking, etc to make the GP more track hardy. I'm coming from 3 years of NASA DE 2/3 with a '05 Boxster S that was fully track prepped. About to buy my first GP (wife has a JCW Coupe) and will be tracking it (DE) 4-6 times a year. Concerned about engine cooling, brakes and running slicks on extra set of tires (hoping they will fit in the hatch).

For serious track work you need to upgrade pads and fluid. The pistons in the front calipers have a ceramic type material on the end that tends to gradually degrade and fragment over time. There are conversion kits available for metal pistons, and should be done at some stage. However, the stock calipers are generally good.

People argue about LSD, whether it is needed, and if so which one. Not essential.

Water temps are generally good stock. If you put a bigger intercooler on, and run very hard, then you can get into issues. Due to the decreased airflow, increased power=increased heat dissipation etc. Oil temps tend to be a little more of an issue, especially when running long sessions in hot weather. There are cooler upgrades.

Stock suspension is not too bad at all. Can be resprung and revalved pretty easily and cheaply if required.

For DE 4-6 times a year, I would do pads and fluid and see how you go, keep an eye on the rest

First post! Welcome to NAM!

I track a 2012 R56 S and have been doing that since new. The GP should be great right out of the box. As was said, track/race pads and brake fluid. I strongly recommend the Carbotech XP10 or XP12, matched sets front and rear. Brake fluid - Motul 600.

Here is a good thread on rebuilding the calipers with full SS pistons. BTW - the GP calipers are from a 135 BMW, that info may help with getting pads for it also.

Get a ScanGage II to read engine parameters. You will be able to read oil and water temp, among other things. The oil temp on these engines runs really high (mine, about 250 degF), so oil changes often. I run 5-40 Motul.

Install a Helix intercooler.

I put 4 tires/wheels in my MCS no problem:

Ok, it is a F56, but I do the same with my R56

You should be good to go...

Motor on and let us know how it goes...

I have a 13 GP that I track. No Engine mods, cooling is fine out of the box. Brakes are fantastic but using Carbotec X-10 then G loc R-10 with high temp motul brake fluid. I change front rotors with each pad change. Changed the front caliper pistons to stainless and high temp dust boots. Rears are stock. After each race I roll the car about 3-4' every 15-30 or so seconds to hopefully reduce the heat sink to the rotors from the pads. Sometimes our cool down laps are a lot les than a lap. I use 225 40 Hoosier R-7 They are tops in price also... 1" hollow rear sway bar and KW V-3 with 450 lb linear springs. It is a blast but could use a few more HP
