JCW Resonator Eliminator

Has anyone installed a JCW Resonator Eliminator? I was thinking about installing on my GP. I was wondering if its worth it, and if the car does sound a little beefier without the resonator? Here is the link, let me know what you all think. Thanks!

I have had this on my car for a month. The burble is a lot louder almost firecracker sounding. Exhaust is louder with this pipe. The exhaust at startup does sound ricey until it is warmed up a bit. There are other posts about this on regular JCW cars. You may like it or may not. Had it on my 03 JCW with a Milltek header and liked it a lot. Still haven't put my header on which deepens the exhaust note.

Great! Thanks, MiniGeePee, for posting this - I have been thinking about this for a while now and couldn't remember where I had read about it previously!
I wanna see those fireballs out the rear!

And, tremendous, newbs49 ! Thanks for the review! I assume it doesn't really sound "ricey" even when warm....can you clarify at all???? I had the Milltek header and cat-back on my 02 and loved that sound! Very quality stuff! But now, I have spotted a 4 pipe header somewhere that looks even better than the Milltek. Must investigated further.

Anyone else out there installed this resonator eliminator and can share some comments about it? Would be much appreciated.
TIA,

Car sounds ok after a few minutes of run time. If you notice the GP has more burble to it than regular S. This becomes a lot louder with the MYmini pipe. Check JCW resonator in search. There is a good amount of info on sound without the resonator.

So is there any performance gain with this mod?

Probably just better sound! maybe a bit of enhanced acceleration.

Definitely on my "maybe something to do after I finish some other things first" list for the GP!

So far (and I'm just breakin it in so haven't spent any time above 4500 or so rpm) I think the JCW exhaust sounds muted a little compared to my 05' MCS with a one ball mod - even without the sound deadening material and back seat out - but maybe its just me...I might give this a try later, but for now the Shark is staying stock.

I didn't notice the last time I was under my GP but I believe that the JCW exhaust from the factory installation is different than the '05. The '05 exhaust was two seperate pieces and that eliminator could be installed without much of a problem. I believe that the '06 factory installed JCW kits are now one piece. I think it can still be used but you would have to cut the pipe to install so if you didn't like it you would now have to sleeve and weld it to get back to where you started. One of my considerations when doing mods is that if at some point I want to bring it back to stock I can.

Yes it's one piece. You'll have to cut the pipe if you use the mymini pipe or someone else's.

Muffler shop mod - $50

Just had mine cut out today and had a straight pipe plugged in in its place. Best $50 I've spent on the car to date. Still tame at idle, not droney, but when it crawls past 4500, watch out -- its how the car should've sounded after the JCW kit was installed.

I'm thinking more and more that this is something the Shark needs - I will still instal the CAI first - and then maybe get this done. Any pipe shop and do the mod?

How about the "kink" in the exhaust before it goes up and over the rear axle? Ive been thinkin about cutting this out and replacing it with a mandrel bend...

That would indeed make a GP rather loud

I thought that the JCW exhaust was too quite for the GP so I purchased the resonator eliminator pipe from myminiparts.com. I was not happy with the eliminator pipe for many reasons.
1. The pipe is really designed for the dealer installed JCW exhaust with the slip joint. For the GP a extension pipe is included with the eliminator pipe. This creates two slip joints with clamps. Both of my slip joints leaked no matter what I did with the clamps. I had a muffler shop weld everything together instead of using the clamps. I have discussed the issue with Peter at myminiparts and he is working on a design change that should be available next month.
2. Even though you must cut the GP exhaust to install the eliminator pipe, the provided eliminator pipe and extra extension are not long enough to replace the compressed area of the GP exhaust. I had a muffler shop make a longer extension pipe for the eliminator pipe that replaced the provided extension pipe and thus I was able to remove the compressed part of the GP exhaust.
3. In my opinion, the ECU programmed exhaust pops at throttle lift, became annoying with the resonator removed. I liked the overall sound/tone without the eliminator but the pops became loud snaps and crackles. My family called it the fart muffler. To me it was embarrassing to drive and I like loud exhausts.
4. I removed the JCW exhaust and installed a Borla Sport exhaust. I love the sound of the Borla Sport, nice deep tone and the pops are just right. However, the Borla Sport is probably too loud for many people (including my wife) due to the drone when cruising on the highway. The Borla Sport is a compromise.

In summary, my opinion is:
The stock JCW exhaust is too quite.
The JCW with resonator eliminated has good tone/loudness but pops/crackles too much upon throttle lift.
The GP needs a different exhaust such as the Borla Sport.

Here's a link to a sound byte of the JCW exhaust with the reonator removed. The mod was done by an exhaust shop who supplied the pipe - after all it's only a straight piece of stanless steel pipe.

Sounds stock to me - I'm concerned about the burble turning too 'pop' ish sounding like Quikmni posted about...I'm still leaning towards having this done on GP1336

I have a .mpg video file of my GP with the JCW exhaust and the resonator eliminated but I do not know how to attach the file to a reply. I will be glad to provide the video if someone can provide some instuctions on how to attach the file. Maybe it must be linked somehow instead of attached.

I believe the .mpg file would have to be out on the web and then you would paste the URL for that website into your reply.

Do I understand you correctly? You are concerned that it turns the burble into a 'pop' ish sound, but you're still thinking of having the mod done. Rather odd since it seems you don't like the new sound.

I want the sound on acceleration - and I don't mind the burble as it sounds now... but the other person posted that his burble changed to a more popping sound and so now I'm thinking I'm going to need to hear it first since i don't want it to sound ricey or something... i want to do this mod just because of the muted sound on acceleration,, but the burble is all good now - just don't want that getting annoying~ I'm not convinced its bad - but i would like to hear it for myself before I go cutting my pipe... you dig?

That makes sense. I too want to hear it for real before I go cutting the pipe.

Here is a link to my video of GP1405 with the stock JCW exhaust.

Here is a link to my video of GP1405 with the Resonator Eliminator pipe installed on the JCW exhaust. I think the pops are a sharper tone (crackle).
