Short Shifter for the GP Wanted
Hey XAlfa,
Does the Helix kit work with a crappy exhaust? I am considering a SSK for my '06 MCS JCW, but don't want to modify the jcw exhaust to fit a different linkage, nor would I prefer a higher shift ****. (I don't auto-x, and tall shift heights remind me of driving around in a Toyota pick-up truck--not the feel I'm looking for in my MCS.) I haven't explored how the OEM ****/linkage actually works... so at this point I don't understand people's statements regarding raised height because of a Whalen ****.

HUMMMMM very interesting thread, as I am trying to decide if I will do this mod or not.
Has anyone information about the Ultrik short shifter kit from MINI Mania?

I believe it has a shorter throw, and the height remains the same, even higher with a longer ****.

AH, XAlfa.....muchas gracias para tu feedback. En ese caso, parece que va a gustarme a mi mucho tambien.
Shorter throw, 1" taller, feels good and good installation - what else could one want?
Now I want to know what someone thinks about the Randy Webb unit. Apparently Randy has used it on track during the MINI races and likes it, but he has a slightly biased opinion no doubt - how about an independant reviewer?
p.s. Is the board going bilingual now?

The stock **** is not hard to remove, mine just pulled straight off the shaft. (it has progs that hld it on) A good tug and it should pop right off.
The Whalen **** attaches easily, you just raise the sleeve, slid the **** on and then release the sleeve back down to lock it in place.
As for the custom engraving, talk to Doug, at Whalen Shift Machine. I believe he already posted to you.
My **** has a bead blast finish and was engraved with the Getrag name and logo.
here is the image i used and a close up of the **** after it was finished.

It looks great in the pics but it looks even better in person!!!

If you do a search on "Whalen" i believe you will find threads of people posting pics of their ***** and their custom engravings. Some of them are alot more detailed than mine. I like to keep it simple.
I installed the MINI Mania Ultrik kit because I wanted a short shift throw without having the **** any lower than stock. I also added a Momo Super Ergo **** that is approximately 2.25" taller than the stock ****.
I have installed this on both of my MINIs and it works great. The shift pattern is nicely tighter with a great feel. Short, direct, and precise. The taller **** is nicely closer to the wheel and falls nicely to hand.
Unlike the Whalen ****, and it's 18oz cannon ball like weight, balanced on top of the shift lever, the Momo **** is light weight. The lighter weight of the Momo **** allows the springs of the shift mechanism to rapidly center the lever within the pattern. It facilitates easy, rapid, and precise shifts with a great feel.
The light weight of the Momo **** is also easier to accelerate thru the shift pattern and places less stress on the shifter mechanism. Lighter weight = less work to shift.
Another added benefit of the Momo **** is that it is a beautifully finished mahagony, or other tropical wood, which does not get as hot in the summer or as cold in the winter as any metal, or even the stock, **** does. You hands will thank you.
