Hey, now ! The JCW GP edition is a real bargain and a very nicely equiped car with significant more get up and go stuff than the regular S.

I have one on order and wish it was here now ! They will be the fastest and best MINI ever built so far !

its something like 70lbs delta in favor of no sunroof....

i think with all glass and motor, sliders, etc weighs into like 105lbs or something...i could be wrong...do a search on sportcompactcar they did a sunroof delete and put a full c/f piece in its place..

but that 100lbs delta between the gp and a reg jcw...did they say the reg jcw had a sunroof?

and also i think the point of the car is the limitedness....not the fact that it is barely lighter and a few more horse....if thats what would make it worht what it is then the evo rs should be through the roof vs an mr...kno wat i mean? =P

Clarification of Criticism

I personally hope they sell every GP they offer (not at ripoff markups) as this will keep people interested in these cars. Kidding is great but lets keep in mind that we don't what people getiing a negative view of Mini owners. I'm 54 years old ond this will be my 58th automobile since I was 16. No I didn't come from a rich family, I've just spent much of my resources on cars. Unfortunately I 've let several get away from me over the year that now have outrageous prices. GP sales mean more MINIS in the USA and that will make it better for all of us. While no car is perfect, we still need stay objective. Also I actually owned a Pinto in Hawaii 30 years ago and it never left me walking, but neither did my 930 Turbo.
Your point is well taken, however, let me clarify something: when I (and many others here) say that the GP is a pathetic, tacky attempt at MINI to end gen1 our criticism is only directed at MINI and the car itself, and not the person or persons who will buy the car. If you do choose to buy a GP, and I can understand why it might appeal to some, I hope it brings you many years and miles of motoring fun and pleasure in something you love having parked in your garage.

Anyone who cannot stand the GP for whatever reason(s) will agree with me here. However, it seems that there are a lot of thin-skinned folks who take this criticism personally, that if we're negative about the car then we're being negative about them for wanting the car. This is simply not the case.

And for those shrill few who wish to censor what those who don't like the GP have to say about the car (you know who you are) these forums would be pretty bland and one-sided if opposing opinions were not presented. It's called free speech , and despite what the P.C. crowd has to say, it's a great thing....

So when we espouse our negative opinions about the GP's overall design and purpose and whatnot, PLEASE don't take it so personally, because it is not meant to come off this this way. Hey, if I see one on the highway I'll flash my lites and wave (if I can), to acknowledge you just like any other MINI owner on the road. After all, I'm acknowledging you, and not the car. Peace, 'quenz

Fastest? How can that be? Take a look at some of the MINIs people own here.

Too funny dude. You go buy a VGS CAI and someone will tell you their Alta is better, etc. etc. etc. Human nature .... "What I BUY is the best" I would interpret it more to be it my money and I'll spend it however I wish and if you don't like it ... TS. I just never understand why people have to validate their acquisitions through what other people think.

Just LOOK at all the Youifiied MINIs out there. Many are way different than others. Can you imagine what the "masses" think of these "clown" cars with the funny graphics on the roofs and fake racing stripes on the Bonnets? Oh WOW, Shelby stripes, Viper stripes ... you want to emulate a Shelby, buy a Shelby Don't be a Shelby wannabe.

If your not getting this, I'm laughing at the entire concept of worrying about what other people think of what you bought. Go have fun. Boop on what others think ... Opinions and a Dollar get you a cup of coffee and since we most ALL have these cars, we can all laugh at ourselves

I believe the reference would the FASTEST production MINI.
Also the cars don't have a sunroof and they ALL have a/c. They are all configured the same from the factory.

The really high performance equipment

They all have AC. They all have heated seats. Really ... imagine ...

It was a dark and stormy night. A light burns through the fog in Oxford. In the light we see as Cooper Jr. stands amidst several MINI engineers, ties loosened, cuffs rolled up.
"We've dropped weight, upped the horsepower, brakes, suspension, but there must be more."
"Heated seats" cries a voice from the background.
"Heated seats" the chant rises above the assembled, the overlooked high performance accessory.
"Colin Chapman. You magnificent b*st*rd. I read your book !"
It was right under our ... er ... noses the whole time.

Colin Chapman rotates in his grave (neatly clipping the apex). But, alas, with a cold butox.

Wow, what a winner of a 19th post. :impatient

Let's see, the JCW GP is a superbly equipped car, admittedly with an OTT aero/spoiler package--but it includes the JCW engine, suspension & brake kits. All for an effective price reduction of about 15-20% over a comparably equipped factory car. Makes sense to me.

MINI USA decided not to go through an expensive redo of the Recaro seats, so that they could accomodate the federally required airbag sensors, and substituted heated 1/2 leather sports seats. Sounds reasonable to me.

Here in E. San Diego County, it was 104 F yesterday & it's 90+ now--I for one would not select to delete the AC. I lived in Chicago until I was 16, I remember the summer heat & humidity. I wouldn't delete the AC if I were still living there. I don't think you would, either.

So, other than the AC & seats, what issues do you have with the GP?? Is it the price? That's out of the control of the GP buyer--if it's too low in comparison to what you paid for your JCW car, complain to MINI USA.

I'll have to swing by Wal-Mart, then. The nearest ones are up by the truckstop & the trailer park, aren't they?

Jim, I still think that your binary 5 is still the coolest roof number.

And I like your hexadecimal 13, for a number of prime reasons.

I like the GP! It's nice, light, fast, limited, and only a few more bucks than a JCW S. Production number on the roof? Worth the price of admission.

Actually, a GP pencils in at less than the cost of a comp. equipped JCW.

Per MINI USA website, a JCW'd MCS, with MFSW, JCW suspension, & JCW spoiler & S-lites comes in at $31,363--right at the GP MSRP (both include the delivery charge). Add an aerokit (plus painting/install), JCW wheels & deduct for the loss of most of the sports package, and you're still at around $36,000.

Cost is only one of the reasons I went for the GP--and then decided to blow a good chunk of the differential on the Monterey delivery.

Easy there ! Didn't mean to run over your ... :impatient
By way of my sense of humor, I was just pointing out that standard heated seats seemed an odd choice, that's all. MINI seems to have spent a lot on R&D with the GP and I agree it is suberbly equipped. I also agree with your logic concerning substituting for the loss of the Recaro's, if in fact that's MINI's reasoning.

Wouldn't live without the AC, either.

Concerning the JCW kit, I got it on sale, with the airbox and injectors.

Just think heated seats in a stripped down interior is odd, that's all.

Friends again ?

Maybe odd...

but they aren't heavy (the heaters that is), and toasty buns on a cold drive sure can be nice!

No, they're usually found in former drained wetlands areas and in suburban rehabilitation zones next to pissed off homeowners. But Hey! Last time I was there I saw some plastic hubcaps that looked just like the GP's wheels for only $24.95. What a deal! Also, some ricer race boy's primer-grey Mitsu in the parking lot had a wing that looked just like the GP's Jimbo

PS heated seats? Now that's a REAL driver's car....

So what's wrong with some comfort? Or is it only "good" if you can't enjoy anything other than driving? I know, lets get rid of everything BUT the motor, drivetrain, one race seat shell. Don't need the dials, you can HEAR the RPM, so get rid of the whole dash.. Screw the parking brake too!

I admit, it would be quite the driver, but it would suck for daily driving (no cupholders! )

I like the cockpit to be quiet keep the "sd" sometimes I put soemone in my back set..... usually 8 years old.... keep the rear seats.... i drove an 06 the other day and my car has about 240-250 hp and with the new tranny the 06 car could give me fits on the track so 210-220 is enough.... the suspension and brakes are what makes the big dif on these cars and the JCW GP addresses that.....how many GT-350s did they make...... I saw a GT-350 convert (they made 4) and it was showroom and only sold for $200,000 at B/J so desireability/rareity is a flex issue....all in all I have more than the GP in my car and the GP will be worth far more than mine 10 years from now......long live JCW....which I do not have but respect enormously......BMW really sould make an "M" 10:1 car for us "enthusiasts"......
