New Headunit?

Just picked up GP0280 Proud new owner. But I'm also a bit of a audiophile. I'm a bit new to the GP world, is the Harmon Kardon an option for the GP or standard? I have the HK system in my previous R53, and this unit looks nothing like it and doesn't have the HK stamps so I'd assume it doesn't The reason I ask is I remember the HK speakers have a specific Ohm to them that cannot be used with most headunits. Can the regular speakers be used with most aftermarket headunits? I'd like to switch out the headunit with one that has iPhone integration so I can charge and play my music at the same time. And then change out the speakers later as I go.

No HK option for the GP.
I replaced the headunit (Kenwood Excelon KDC-X994) and speakers (Polk Audio db6501) plus added a PAC-SWI for the steering wheel controls. The PAC-SWI does not work perfectly and I would suggest a different interface unit.

Thanks for the info guys. It appears there are headunits that are plug and play that still preserves the MF steering wheel function without the need of a interface unit controller. Looks like I have to do some digging. Ideally, I'd like to replace the headunit for the time being just so I can charge and use my iPhone to play music at the same time. I will eventually upgrade the two front speakers.

Now that you have proper responses to sort through, I would like to add that the best sounds from a GP originate in the CAI and end in the exhaust bins. I call it "surround sound"

I have the Parrot Asteroid and although the software has been buggy, it does fulfill a couple wish items such as BT phone integration, steering wheel control compatibility, and ipod charging/control. It also looks really good and has a nice modern LCD screen that is pretty sharp. Buy from Crutchfield as they have great service and can provide you with the proper accessories to install. BTW, the Asteroid actually sounds VERY good despite its buggy OS (Android 1.5). Overall I would give it a 8.5/10 and 1.5 stars is for the software glitches. They have an updated 1.6.1 OS out and its been pretty stable so far.

My brother ordered a new headunit from Crutchfield and some sort of device to retrofit the steering controls. Works beautifully, steering wheel controls and all. The speakers actually sound much better as well. My brother did the purchase and install as a birthday gift. I can ask him for specific parts if anyone is interested.

I just put 2 Ken wood Excelon x996's in both of our R53's with Sirius XM, couldn't be happier. That paired with the JL Audio ZR Components in mine make a HUGE difference in sound. Now I just need to find the right amp to hide under the seat!

I went with the Alpine CDA9887 in the dash because of the extensive active cross over network and EQ options. Running the Alpine PDX-5 under the seat. Compact install with all the bells and whistles an audiophile could want.
