Mini GP engine trouble

When I'm driving, suddenly the computer shuts down the power to the engine. Only allowing me to drive very slowly and not allow revs above 2.5 -3. Check engine light comes on.

I turn off the engine and restart it, and the engine returns to normal until it happens again.

Any idea whats going on?? No Mini dealership in Bloomington, IL:(

That's call "limp mode" - lots of things can cause it. You need to have the codes read and see if they give you any clues. Sometimes a cheapo generic code reader (like they will use for free at most auto parts stores) will give you sufficient clues. Sometimes you need the dealer scantool, or another BMW-enhanced scantool that can see the extended code and history data.

I have had this happen on my car before as well. My problem was that I had a missfire code. All I did was replace my coil pack, plug wires and plugs.

jimp,
Once you obtain the code, lets us know what the code is and maybe we can provide some suggestions for troubleshooting or repair without going to the dealer.

Seems it occurred whenever it was wet. Once things dried out, it stopped going into limp mode. Since I'm currently in Bloomington, IL, I'm out of luck as there is no Mini dealership. The BMW dealer wouldn't touch it.

So for now it's mystery.

Thanks again

The next time your car goes into limp mode take it to BMW or just some mechanic place. Tell them you just want them to pull the "code". If you can get that I can help out a lot more.
