How-to: $15 Free Flow Air Filter for GP (JCW Intake)
How-to: $15 Free Flow Air Filter for GP (JCW Intake)
I was looking at options when installing a K&N style cone filter for the JCW intake on the GP and I sort of drafted up this simple mod. Most of the direct fitment filters are quite pricey, so I located a 3" inlet K&N style filter on Ebay for $12 shipped and fabricated it to fit in the JCW intake.
The OD of the JCW box is approx 3.4". The K&N filter is 3"

The height of the K&N filter is about 30% less than OEM, however, it is rated for the Honda 1.8L size engines. It is also oil coated cotton instead of a paper filter.

STEP 1
With a sharp blade, cut the rubber filter base from the paper. After the base is removed, use a sander or sand paper and sand the remaining paper off the base so that it is smooth.

STEP 2
Grasp the K&N style filter and press in on the rubber base to break the adhesive and push the rubber base away from the filer. It doesnt take much effort to remove the base. Be careful not to damage the filter. Once removed, lay the OEM base on the K&N filter and check for fitment. The OEM base should be exactly proportionate to the K&N filter bottom. Remove the base and scuff up the chrome on the K&N filter.

STEP 3
With the base facing downward, apply a bead of grey or black silicon gasket sealer to the outside edge of the base. Apply a layer of 5min epoxy along the middle of the base. Be sure to use a good quality epoxy capable of withstanding 500F.

STEP 4
Mate the OEM base with the K&N filter base. Wipe off any excess. Apply pressure (or a small weight) and allow the epoxy to dry overnight.

STEP 5
Place the K&N supplied hose clamp over the newly attached OEM base and install the filter onto the JCW intake housing. Reinstall the intake.

Nice write-up
I couldn't quite figure - after doing this mod, would a future filter change be as simple as pulling the glued together base off one and on to another?
I'd love to re-post this on GPMINI, with your permission?

Because the filter is a K&N style cotton mesh, it never needs replacing. Just wash, reoil and go. I usually do it every 10K.
$28 isnt bad. $12 is even better!
Feel free to reprint as you wish.
Thx!
This notion seems to come around on NAM about every six months - at almost $200 for the replacement JCW paper filter, I can understand why...

Just get the K&N filter that fits without modification (RU-3130) - $28 direct from K&N) , and save a lot of screwing around. You don't really need to adapter ring described in the thread, just install it and tighten the supplied hose clamp.

Any one have knowledge of the difference in performence between the K&N filter that fits without modification (RU-3130) - $28 direct from K&N and the "Madness" JCW Intake High Flow Kit, priced at $99?
Thanks
