I can't yet comment on expenses related to repairs. However I feel the MINI is great for insurance. Liability on my 91 Plymouth Laser (91 Hp base model) was around $700 every six months, full coverage on the MINI is around $800 every six months and I haven't turned 25 yet! When they gave me that quote I thought the State Farm Agent was quoting for a Cooper, the agent confirmed it was a Cooper S. For a bit more perspective insurance for a Lancer Evolution was going to be $1600 every six months.

I believe I read somewhere that an '05 S is around 42 cents per mile compared to an '05 Accura TL at 50 cents per mile. Edmunds could help you with that information in their 'True Cost To Own' section.

Over the long term I doubt any euro car would be as cheap as a Honda to own but there is cost and then there is value, and that is subjective. I think my MINI and BMW are every bit as good of a value as the Honda and Acura we own, even if they are slightly more expensive to maintain.

Yeah, probably the Honda-family cars are the cheapest to own in the long run due to the price of parts and how little they break... however, European cars are so much more fun to drive!

I looked at other cars before the Mini and it turned out that Mini was the cheapest to insure. With clean record & a high-deductible, I pay less than $1000 pa. The other cars, VW GTI and Honda Civic Si, were both almost double to insure, with the Honda being the most expensive at about $1500 pa.

With the savings in insurance and maintenance for the first 4 years, I might even be able to pay for a few repairs to the Mini after warranty expires

Insurance even less than a scion tc! Did get new tires and an unscheduled oil change the other day, but it's back to spritely again.

My family has owned Accords in recent years and those cars seem to have issues with the brakes. After 12 years of owning nothing but Hondas and Acuras I am not longer impressed by them. Sorry, Honda had its time (When everything else was pretty much junk and they were the only game in town, really) but unless you are a die hard Honda fanatic, I do not see much of a reason to buy their products over everybody else's better offerings.

Well, let's not get into Tommy Tancredo's bigoted views of the world.... Funny he himself is an immigrant of "italian" origin but some claim that he has some Mexican blood flwoing thru his veins..

I think he should worry more about his constituents in Denver, than issuing inflammatory comments about Miami. yeah this is not a perfect city and we have too many problems to deal with (namely corruption in local government), but last I checked I did not see thrashy wagons been pulled by donkeys, electrical outages or lack of drink water in our water systems.

If he wants to issue 3rd world critiques, he should explain why places such as Buffalo, NY, Detroit, MI or Cleveland, OH look like dilapidated 3rd world enclaves...and he can't really blame it on immigration....

Going back to the insurance comments, yes we have terrible drivers down here, that I can't argue against.

how much is a yearly insurance policy, with comprehensive coverage, and a $1,000 deductible on a 2011 MCS?

I've added up my running total for this year:

$2900 granted $600 of that was for rubber and another $600 in "upgrade parts"

Ho Lee ***

Out of all that less than $250 was labor paid to other parties some coding work at the dealer and a tire mount and balance.

The year prior was about $2k mostly speed parts

I recommend getting the extended warrantee from the dealer when you get your car! In my case, first one was used with still good warrantee, second was used from the dealer and I added a two year extended. I do not know how both cars knew it expired, so get the thrill of paying out the nose.
Parts for my 1969 Chevy pickup are dirt cheap. If I was restoring it, the national content would drop significantly since many parts are made in Taiwan or China. LOL
