Basically, once a work (artwork like this / manuscript / photograph) has been created, the author/creator is automatically granted copyright.

Not trying to bust anyone's chops, but I'm sure Craig would appreciate it if people that wanted to modify his original works would drop him a PM to let him know what they would like to modify and ask for permission from him to do so.
