Insight needed

Greetings, everyone. I am new to this forum but not new to the Mini world and am currently researching MINI models to determine which year and configuration would best suit my wife's needs.

I am particularly drawn to the MINI’s compact footprint and sporty handling. As we intend to keep our truck, the MINI’s size seems ideal for her daily commute. My current preference is a used Cooper S with a manual transmission, though I plan to visit a dealership to test drive a newer model for comparison.

I understand there were significant mechanical and design transitions between 2006 and 2007. I would greatly appreciate your insights regarding the most reliable model years, essential features, or potential pitfalls to avoid. Additionally, if you have recommendations for reputable research resources beyond this forum, please let me know.

I love my supercharged '04 R53 manual. I've owned it since new after having it shipped over across the pond in 2003. For that reason I am a bit bias. If you should come across one and find yourself as enamoured as I am with this model (2002 - 2006), just be sure you get a full maintenance record. Every part on these 1st generations need to be replaced/upgraded. Unless you enjoy wrenching - If not you can be sure you'll be spending lots of time & $$$ making it a fun and reliable car for your wife.
Although, I am not familiar with regards to the later models ('07 R56 - and later), I have read/heard that the 2016 models and later have become more reliable.
I'm fairly certain that those more seasoned with experience will share their insite of these later model Minis.
Best of luck and welcome back to the family.
