$400 Security Coding Charge

I recently ordered a new mini S convertible. There is a charge of $399 listed for "Security Coding". I'm told that it's for if the car is stolen. What exactly is it they do for $399? I'm inclined to pass on it.
Thanks

Sounds like maybe VIN etching? I would ask for full explanation of what's involved, then pass.

That was my guess. The replacement for the rustproofing add on of years past. I asked for more details.
