Refitting R53 subframe - problem steering rack universal joint

I’m in the process of refitting subframe back on the mini, after stripping down everything, subframe have been painted and replace all hoses from power steering rack.

now the steering column universal joint doesn’t seem to align perfectly with steering rack, there is no lot a room to force it in back in place, it looks a little of.

when I remove it I had the steering wheel in lock position. Now it should be in right position.

any thoughts?

Also notice this from the inside on the steering column, pink marks does not align, I don’t know if was like that before removing subframe

Although I have no experience with R&R/dropping the subframe (yet) - Having planning and preparing to preform this task soon - I'd recently read a thread here somewhere on NAM with others having the same problem. (sorry, ' can't seem to find the thread/post right now).
IIRC: it was suggested to turn the steering wheel a slight quarter turn(?). I don't recall how little or to turn the wheel left or right.
I am sure someone with more in-depth knowledge will be along shortly with more of a definitive answer.
In the meantime; I suppose you can turn the steering wheel slightly and see if it becomes any easier to align and make the fit.

Thank you for you reply. I think that’s the more logical approach. I’ll run the ignition to free the steering. Should I attach the tie rod ends to steering knuckles first?
