Supercharged Mini Cooper S

I am new to Mini land and considering Mini convertible S with automatic tranny. I have read a lot of different narratives about issues in the 1st Gen Mini S with supercharger. I may be purchasing a 2006 in the near future. In the event of supercharger failure (which is about $2,200 to replace.to repair), is it possible to remove it and just run normally aspirated?

You'll have more problems with the auto tranny, than the supercharger.

I have read about the CVT transmission, and it's high failure rate. The S supposedly has a regular automatic transmission. I am not averse to manual, I actually prefer, but the vehicle has a clean carfax and is nicely equipped and priced within the range for 2006's. I am looking at all my options. I am not crazy about aftermarket warranties however, with a mini it might be a prudent purchase? Opinions?
