Advice on which used MINI Cooper S to buy

I purchased one of the first 2002 Mini Coopers in North Carolina. Loved the car, hated the consistent trips to the dealer due to various problems. I bought a Miata, now I want to come back to a Cooper S, but not a new one. I'm considering either a first gen 2005 or 2006 or a second gen 2007. I know the differencer on paper; supercharger vs. turbocharger, but I'm looking for advice. Thanks!

motoringfile.com has a buyer's guide that is excellent. Check it out.

IMHO, after having done a bit of research, the 2006 is the year to look for if you don't like the updated MINI.

Go for an R56 with low miles.

IMO, the best MINI made was the 2006 model year.

I love my 06, however, you should test drive one of each and get the one you like the best. I hear that the r56 rides a little more comfortably and may be a bit faster on top end, however, the r53 handles a bit sportier "tighter".

I happen to agree with Les.

ufomini is correct: drive a number of MINIs if you can. That will inform your choice in a very tangible way.

As for me, I've driven both and find them to be very different MINIs. I see the appeal of the R56, but prefer both the aesthetic of the R50/53 and the driving experience. I plan on keeping my Gen1 indefinitely.

Love the 1st generation. Love the easily upgradable supercharger. Love the fact that it cost at least $5K less than a 2nd gen. And I absolutely love hearing that supercharger whine when you stomp it.

The power bands are in different spots for the turbo vs. the supercharger. I like the feel of the supercharged engine pulling more than the turbo. And when you can hear that supercharger whining, it's almost like that adds more fun to your driving experience.

Either way, it is win/win. The 2nd gen owners will tell you 2nd gen. The 1st gen owners will tell you 1st gen. Find one you love and drive it until it falls apart. We plan on it.

Thanks for the advice!

I guess I'll find a 2006 and a 2007 and see which one I like the best.
