Looking at this 2004 JCW, Don’t recall seeing the two red reflectors in the bumper. Not really liking it either. Looks odd.

 

They’re reflectors that came with the clear lens taillight kit.

 

Did not know that, definitely ruins the rear end. Was that a dealer install item? Or people cut up their own bumpers. I like the clear lense on that blue, but not the other colors.

 

They were a MINI accessory so both dealer installed or DIY. Not sure about other countries, but red reflectors in the rear are required by law in the US, and since the clear taillights remove the red reflectors, the separate reflectors had to be included to keep the car/kit road legal.

Another weird thing about those lights is the colored bulbs are soldered to the circuit board so the entire board is supposed to be replaced if a light goes out. That can get expensive unless you can find colored bulbs and replace them yourself since the boards are about $60 each. The bulbs also have that chrome/reflective coating on the glass to keep the taillights as white as possible when off.

 

Yep rare option on a rare aero bumper that is nla.
