Help - Need to move my Mini

I've got a 2009 Mini Cooper S, manual transmission, that is dead to the world. Engine is shot, battery is totally dead. I need to move it from where it has sat for over a year (auto shop who said they could fix it) to a storage unit, less than 1 mile away.

Can I flat tow it using a tow strap, or do I need to pay someone to move it using a flat bed or tow dolly? Will the steering unlock with the key in position, or does that rely on the electrical system?

Looking for advise and direction, if possible.

Thanks.

I have a 2011 Clubman. My car doesn't have a steering lock. I put it in neutral and go. The steering will be really stiff and I would make darn sure you have adequate brakes for your venture. The roll back or dolly would be a safer way to do it.

For a mile? Tow strap should be fine if you have two competent people doing it. With the key in the ignition the steering should not lock and if you have issues stopping, just use the hand brake.
