Best price on Extended Warranty?

Hi Everyone,

I am about to take the plunge and buy my first MINI--a new 2017 4-door Cooper.

Since I am a high mileage driver, I would like to purchase the XXL warranty. I was quoted $2500 for the 100,000 mile package.

When I bought similar warranties for my Toyota and Honda, I was able to get a better deal from an out of state dealer online (or play one dealer against another).

Does anyone recommend a MINI dealer who might be willing to negotiate with me?

Also, can I add this before I hit 50,000 miles, or do I need to purchase it now? I have read conflicting things about this.

Thanks!

I would send an email to as many dealers as you can asking those questions. Especially the competitive markets. The profit on those is enough to get some competitive quotes.

I don't have an answer for you as I've never bought one but I'm curious to know how they worked out for you on your Toyota and Honda. How much did it cost for both and how much would your maintenance have cost if you didn't have the extended warranties?

For the Toyota Corolla I spent about $1000 for a 100,000 mile warranty. Around 90,000 miles, I needed a new wheel bearing which would have cost $600 or so.

So, I didn't actually save money, but in terms of peace of mind, it was sure nice not to have to shell out $600 at that moment. FYI, the Corolla currently has 293,000 miles on it and is still going. I'm keeping it even though I am getting the MINI.

The Honda Pilot warranty cost about $1500. It paid for a new leaking oil pan and related parts around 50K miles, but I am not sure what the cost would have been. Maybe $400.

Then around 70K miles, the sunroof would sometimes refuse to open or shut. Perfect, I thought, I have the warranty. But Honda tried to say that since glass is not covered (and it was the seal around the glass that was the problem), they would not cover it. So I had the dealership appeal to Honda national, as well as tweeting the problem @ Honda. In the end that honored the warranty, and that saved me about $800.

Call Mini Scottsdale, as AZ does not tax on warranties sold, that alone will save you some $$$. They also gave me a better price than my dealer.

Scottsdale just quoted $4,060 for a 5 yr/100,000 mile XXL warranty. Yikes! That seems very high to me.

TJANK, what did you pay, and what kind and term of warranty did you get?

For anyone following this, I did shop around (I did it by email so I would have something in writing to show my dealer). South Shore MINI in Massachusetts quoted me $2230, and Mini of Peabody, where I bought my car, beat it at $2130 (they originally wanted $2900).

Also, Scottsdale dropped suddenly from $4060 to $2380, and MINI of Warwick came in at $3200.

So the lesson here is definitely to shop around---these numbers all all over the map.

They can obviously play with this number a lot more than they can with the cost of the vehicle itself.
