"Can I drive your car?"

That age old question we all dread (well at least I do). It's not that I don't let anyone drive my car, it's just that since I purchased my Mini back in November, my co-workers have been asking if they could try it. If I let one drive it then I have to let them all. So, how do you guys answer the question: "can I drive your car?"

Only asked of me once in my life. We swapped cars for an afternoon. They got a BMW 635 and I drove a Corvette, both new cars at the time. Mine was far superior.

In your case just say no, with the explanation of everyone wanting to drive it.

A curmudgeonly hurumph then turn around and walk away. It's no different than lending anything. Nobody cares about what they borrow because they didn't take care of their own. Another response: Not only no, but he!! no. They'll put a ding in it and hand you back the key and maybe say sorry in that aggravating insipid manner.
Another thought just flitted thru my mind. Say 'Sure, if I can borrow your wife'.

Yes, I don't really trust them to care for it as much as I do. Although they do know that I'm totally in love with my car and care for it very well. In fact, my boss parked within inches of my back bumper the other day just to make me nervous. It didn't. The only thing it did was annoy me because I couldn't get into the boot.

I believe they ask because they know how precious it is to me. But some do ask because they lust after it. Anyway I'm a girl and they're all men, I can't necessarily use the "if I can borrow your wife" come back. Mostly I just say "Nope!" I was just curious if other people get asked as much as I do, must be a Mini thing. One of my close friends volunteered herself to be the designated driver the other day, just so that she could drive my car back from the party we were at. 😜

t might be difficult for you to say no but as you grow older it will get easier. In the mean time, force yourself - - - NO!

p.s. The 'if you lend me your wife' could still work.

I let people drive our mini but only if I'm with them. There are plenty of curious friends who have heard about the Mini and its go-kart like handling but they have never had the opportunity to sample one first hand. I don't mind indulging their curiosity but not to the extent of letting them have the car for an afternoon. It's not like the car requires a special skill set to operate like a motorcycle and the car isn't good for 300 kmph like a motorcycle so the risk is low. Needless to say I don't feel the same about my motorcycle obviously.

Be careful what you wish for...etc

You might be twice as sorry if they choose to take you up on that offer.

A firm but respectful "no" should do the trick. If people wanna experience what your MINI can do, maybe offer to take them out for a fun little spin.

I think I need to clarify the wife borrowing issue a little. See, I've got rain gutters that need cleared, second story windows need cleaned, got a place out in the country that needs bobwire fence repair and a garage that needs completely cleaned out and re-organized. All things I'd never ask my wife to do.

PS: "I don't need no steenkin' Sport button." Wish I'd said that.

My friends know better than to ask. Heck, my wife's never even driven it and I drive her Boxster all the time.

I've let folks test drive my MINIs and my Mini ... but I was in the pass' seat all but ONE time.

The one exception was the guy who wanted to drive my 79 and offered me the keys to his Ferrari .....

Thank you good sir. Your original "wife borrowing" comment was equal parts gold.

Let someone drive my beloved MINI?---THE HORROR!!! Heck I don't even like it when a MINI tech has to drive it into a maintainance bay for an oil change. Like the anti drug campaign of old--"Just say no". Good luck!

No one has ever asked. My wife hasn't even asked. She (obviously) is more than welcome to drive it anytime but nobody else.

You might consider answering: No you can't drive it, but I will take you for a ride in it.

Get with your local SCCA chapter for some competitive driving lessons then take your guests out on the twisties to show them what it can do. They'll never ask again.

I had a sticker on the back window that read:

"Yes, its fast. No, you can't drive it."

I removed it as I thought it might invite someone to key my Mini. . . . . . . .

I have only had mine for about a month, but I have noticed that every time we have to drive to a meeting someone always wants to ride with me. None of this ever happen when I would drive to work in my 2013 VW TDI.

Since I acquired Jasper, only two other people have driven him: my dad and my brother-in-law.

It's not that I don't trust anyone else. In fact, no one else has asked to take him for a spin.

I am not opposed to letting someone else drive him, but I would have to know and trust the person and be assured that they can drive a manual. I would let someone else drive him just so I can see the grin that will appear on their face!

There is this one dude who now all of a sudden wants to go to lunch with me (and I drive) 2-3 time a week. On top of the fact that I just don't like the dude because he is extremely obnoxious, he is also grossly covered in Eczema, and leaves a pile of dead skin everywhere he goes. The 2 times that I did accept his invite, I spent 2 hours in the parking lot sanitizing my interior after work.
