This idle sound normal?

First mini, first forced induction engine. So im not sure how loud they should be. Anyway: day four and 150 miles later, this sound normal?

I can also get a start and longer idle video if it would help...

With the videos, I find it more helpful to move the camera/phone around the engine while recording to better pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

That said, it almost sounds like a failing timing chain tensioner, which allows the chain to rattle around inside (An easy fix btw). Is the sound loudest at the rear passenger side of engine? Does the sound subside or go away when the engine is warmed up?

I would say yes, it sounds like the area nearest the passenger, but i may just think that because after you asked that's where i focused my attention. I took another video and moved the camera around.

After watching the video, it still sounds like a failing or failed timing chain tensioner.

I'll ask again; Does the sound subside or go away when the engine is warmed up?

Sorry i missed the part about it going away, no the sound is consistent throughout operation. This video was taken after a 10 minute drive. If it helps i have noticed that my super charger has a much deeper tone than what i have seen in other mini s videos.

In the early stages of the timing chain tensioner failing, it'll make that rattling noise at startup and quiet down when the oil gets flowing. As the part continues to degrade, the rattling becomes constant. Wait too long, and it can seize up and the chain can skip links, severely throwing off the timing.

Of course, you've had the car for just a few days, so you haven't had a chance to witness the full process.

For the $40 to $50 it takes to replace the timing chain tensioner (if you do it yourself), I'd start with that. I think there's a good chance that your clattering will end with the replacement of that part.

Keep us posted.
