ECU Upgrade Question

Born of pure ignorance:

Why do most ECU upgrades promise an increase of "X" amount when I can find BMW upgrades that promise "XX" amount?

An unnamed outfit can turn your 189 hp 2.0l engine into a 245hp one. But! Seemingly the same engine in the BMW 2-series is rated at 245hp and there's a site that claims to be able to push that to near 300hp.

What gives?

Most manufacturers leave some room for fine tuning that relates to the fuel and spark maps of the engine. Some of this involves the mechanical limitations of the engine, and which camshaft may be in a specific model.

Some other tuning details are included in this article:

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any questions!

It is much easier to get more horsepower from a turbocharged car than normally aspirated. The tuners typically increase the boost pressure and sometimes adjust timing.

Manufacturers tune the engine to get the horsepower that they feel delivers the correct drivability for the car taking in account factors such as, model trim (S or JCW), weight, FWD or RWD.

I think the 2L can be tuned to near 300hp safely, but why would you want that in a mini? For a rwd platform, that would be more usable. otoh, 189hp is seriously undertuned for the mini application.

One more tip....
Since the similar engine is so detuned in the MINI....
You might want to research if it is made from the same parts....
It is common for similar or the same motors to have diffent components....
Case in point, though dated, there were 3 main versions of the gen1 tritech motor...
At each step up...more durable, stronger components were specified...
So while the blocks were the same....items like cams, cranks, oil jetting, were all different....
We know that while the new BMW mini engine share much in common with its higher HP cousin, I'd guess the folks doing the tuning for a job has cracked the parts catalog....and compared items....
And based on the components used, have picked a number they believe won't cause too many issues....
Guessing it might take a few years for the info to trickle out about WHICH items limit HP gain....
Weaker tranny or CV joints....the MINI IS FWD....and that is a huge factor...maybe lower spec fuel pumps, lower grade positions, different cams....
While a manufacturer saves big $$ using SIMILAR motors in many cars, cost cutting does more to save the $$. Why use alloy #1 for the positions if you can use #2 in 30% of the motors being built, and save 5% on those.... The possibilities are endless....
What do we know for sure...lol...nothing yet.

Agreed.
Just get I8 spec parts

I'm not looking for 300, I'd be happy with...something more than 189.
