My 2010 Cooper S Clubman now has 60,000 miles. The engine service light came on but no codes came up on the OBD. Nothing came up on the engine check cycle or the service cycle. I accessed the more extensive read out on the display by holding the trip reset for 10 seconds then scrolling thru to 19 and entering the sum of the last 5 vin numbers. Going thru the menu items nothing came up. The local dealer said the thermostat was bad, and the PCV valve cover ???? to the tune of $1,200. I asked if the tech could unlock the codes so they could be read from the car display and I was told only they could read these diagnostics..
Is not letting the owner of the vehicle see the onboard diagnostics the basis for a class action lawsuit?https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...milies/mad.gif
The codes you see via the onboard aren't always going to help you in your diagnostic. You need to either have a professional level scan tool or go to a shop that does.
In which case, I would recommend finding a Euro specialist who will give you the information you need and fix your car properly and cheaper than the dealer.
If they told you the car needed X part or Y part based on the present codes you are entitled to see the codes or a print out of why they diagnosed what they did.
This tool will find the stored codes, I could see all my old stored codes from a failed battery to the convertible top function to a bad PDC sensor. It will find most of them unless the codes were fully cleared by a dealership. This will help you narrow it down. Then post up what you find.
