So the Ural is a cheap knockoff of a BMW and the Dnepr is a cheap knockoff of the Ural? Is that kind of like those Russian dolls that fit into one another?

When the Soviet Union split motorcycle production, they built a factory in Ukraine near the Dnepr River. Soviets liked to name factories after local landmarks.

So after the mid 1950's all military production moved to the new Dnepr factory.

Dneprs were made more heavy duty than the civilian version Ural, to tolerate military use. Dneprs weigh about one hundred pounds more than a similarly equipped Ural, because everything is just a little bigger. In the mid seventies they started selling Dneprs for civilian use.

The Dnepr engine is very much like a BMW airhead engine, with babbit bearings and a high pressure oil pump. They were designed to carry two soldiers and 600 pounds of gear, hardly a cheap copy.

Due to the greater weight, they are a bit slower than a similarly equipped Ural

...I have noticed it hard for a lot of drivers to wave when one hand is on the wheel and the other is holding a cell phone to the side of their face...

I try to always wave... even when not in one of my MINIs.

Motor on!

My parents had VW Beetles too! They have talked about waving to each other, sometimes flashing the lights, and once in a while doing the windshield wipers instead. Here is a picture taken in Glen Canyon before Lake Powell flooded it.

I will bet classic VW owners wave to each other now, not Golfs.
