So, about this waving thing....
Some people wave here but judging by the appearances of their cars they are other enthusiasts. Most people (especially women, no offense intended) seem to be just driving a small car. All wavers so far have been men
I always wave to other MINIs, I like to spread the positive, life is great vibe! I don't get to rattled if other MINIs don't wave. There are a lot of really angry stressed out people on the road! Even ones in MINIs!
The other day I drove to Seattle, about an hour drive, I waved at four MINIs and all of them waved back. Generally, I get a 50% response to my waves.
On my motorcycle, I get more like 95% return waves, it is a funky looking old Soviet era military bike with a sidecar. People wave at the bike even if they are not driving anything.

I'm a Waver
Sometimes I get waves back, most of the time I don't- either way, though, I'm happy to see a fellow Motorer/enthusiast. I like to think that at some point during the busy day, the smile and wave will help lighten the load, even if it wasn't returned at the moment.

I too went to Sturgis ('99) and didn't wave there; I had to keep my hands on the controls for fear of what the drunk up ahead of me would do. People would stop for no reason in the middle of the road without warning. Crazy SOBs.
You may get more waves in the U.S. but I thin it's the wrong car in the U.K. maybe there too.
The real Mini gets waves and lamp flashes everywhere, these are just another modern small car. Some owners have moved over, and they wave just as they used to, trying to hang on to history that isn't there.
I was waved to once in the MCS, don't know if they saw me wave back, was a bit late haha, caught off guard.
If I get the old Mini out, someone would during the journey. VW Beetle owners did or do? They did when I had mine. Bikers here all day long give the acknowledging nod, foot out, wave, lights but mostly the nod, funny.

Thank you for all the responses. It is enlightening indeed. It is true that New Englanders are not known for warmth toward strangers. I grew up in the Western New York area, and the difference is night and day. There is also a huge difference between the way people look at being neighbors. Here we hardly know them, in spite of reaching out. There neighbors were automatically friends and took care of each other. We have relatives and friends there still, and it hasn't changed. A young lady with two kids and a job, who lives across the street, has taken responsibility for looking after my 92 year old father in law, who is alone now.
On another note, I am also a motorcycle rider. Have been for many years. Riders do mostly wave here still, except during bike week. Can't wave at all the bikes during bike week - you have to use the clutch, horn, or turn signals sometimes.
I've only had the MINI 2 days, so I'll keep waving and see what happens. There are quite a few MINI's around here, so maybe that is part of it.

I do wave back though, if I am paying attention!
I saw a bit of the same thing in the motorcycling community from 1977 when I started to 2002 when I finally felt mortal and stopped.
Ah well.
Cheers,
Charlie
I started waving in February when I got my car ...still to this day have not received the friendly gesture back!!!!!! Anyone who's in the car with me ...tells me to give up, I refuse! Here in RI there are a lot of Mini's ...I live in the city and both Brown and RISD are literally in my back yard ... lots of these college kids have brand new MINIs and could care less or are maybe saying to themselves, pervy grandpa is waving! LOL
I once waved at a woman in a red MINI like mine. We were facing each other across a four way stop intersection. She scowled as if she didn't know why a stranger was waving at her. I returned her scowl with a goofy crosseyed face.
Some people are so self-absorbed that they don't understand that someone with a car just like theirs would wave at them.

I don't normally wave at other MINi's nor ever see them gesturing either...
yesterday while taking a cruze down a back road ...both MINI's that passed me (both where r56's) gave me the "wave"... I waved back of course

I wave generally if the mini is nice, or moddedd other than that I really don't bother. Most minis on the road (or at least from what I've seen) are women drivers and they don't seem to return the wave or light flashes. I'm not exactly sure why, maybe they don't know or assume someone is trying to hit on them, but because of this I just avoid the wave unless it's a car I think will understand what's going on. I will say the modded minis seem to wave back almost 100% of the time. Also I tend to get a lot of waves from subaru's, bmw's, focus st's, etc. I think in this area we have a pretty decent car (well the TRUE car community at least, we still have a ton of ricer kids too) community and of you have something that's done right you get some respect it's nice.
