Mini Lease Mileage Question...

We wrote a lease with Mini a year ago at 10k miles annually...Its a 3 year lease.

Now of course my son has moved and he'll be putting more miles on the car to and from school than we anticipated. We're definitely going to go over the 30,000 after 3 years..

Question - should I look to try and re-write lease now (good luck to me) or try and buy more miles now? If its even offered.

Or would I be better off just seeing what transpires over the next 2 years and bite the bullet at the end of lease? Or maybe hope for a pull-ahead of some kind where they might not ding us for mileage??

Any thoughts or advice appreciated!!

I haven't done a lease, but a couple of thoughts. It certainly can't hurt to talk to them and explain the situation and what options they can offer. What is the cost per mile over 30k if you don't do anything? Should be written in your lease agreement.

I did some additional research after opening the thread and Mini does offer a purchase additional miles for .16/mile if done before lease end.

Any additional miles (excessive wear) at lease end are charged at .20/mile..

While .04 per mile doesn't seem like much, from a % standpoint its a nice savings...

I think you're right and I'll talk to them over the phone too...Wont hurt to hear what they have to say

Its a "pay now or pay later" question. If you can truly estimate the amount of miles over you 30K allowed under your current lease, it would be cheaper to pay now and get it over with. you cant "re-write" a lease but you can take them up on the discount if done in advance.. Its like having a coupon...

Hey !!! i made "first gear" with this post !! lol

The classic issue with getting a Lease....
Life changes, and you are locked in...
Typically you might need to just BUY the car at the FIX pre-agreed upon price....but here is the issue...
Leases are ALMOST ALWAYS written to END BEFORE the factory warranty....thus the car can be sold used as a CPO....if it is ONE MILE over warranty, NO CPO, so MUCH LOWER value....and the reason for the HUGE over mile charge....

This is the first lease in over 15 years where i've been caught in the mileage trap...Hopefully, I'm only looking about about $400-500 out of pocket. Or, they'll want to do a pull ahead on it.

The lesson here is not about cars..Its about promises young adults in their 20's shouldn't make and can't keep - and their gullible parents for listening to them!

Anyways, thank goodness I negotiated decent enough deal outside of the dumb mileage decision...
