I break the law and corner hard all the time, but I stay in one lane. It's not a mustang, you don't need two lanes to negotiate a curve.

I'm a motorcyclist as well (although not for a couple of years now.) so asinine behavior like this irritates me. Several guys I've been on rides with have been killed by *******s crossing the center line.

That was the dumbest comment ever on this forum. I never said that, I think his MINI looks cool and the photo is cool lol.

goodness, a lot of people getting in a tissy......

quite simply, i cant condone driving over the line......but at the end of the day, no one died and no one got hurt......so whys everyone all up in arms?

did he break the law?...well yes, most likely.....but then again, so do most drivers every time they drive in one form or another........hell, ill eat my hat if anyone here actually drives the posted speed limit.

he who is without sin throw the first stone......if youve ever gone over the speed limit, if youve ever darted around a slow driver, if youve ever flashed your high beams at someone, or if youve ever drifted on a dirt road....you are equally as dangerous a driver as this guy.

But my car isn't covered with stickers proclaiming what a hot sh*t driver I am.

This is completely different. Crossing the center line on a blind curve is akin to playing Russian roulette. Just because the firing pin landed on an empty cylinder this time does not mean its safe, smart, or a good thing to do. Leaving safety to chance is not a responsible strategy. At least when someone plays Russian roulette there is only one victim.

Thanks for the ad hominem. It added a lot to the discussion. Let's just recall exactly what you said:

"I'd do this too for a cool photo like that. So if you see me at the dragon, don't worry I won't hit you"

Sorry, but any intelligent (!) reader, like all those other people who commented on your post would understand that you think it's fine to cross the line for a "cool" photo. I'm not going to attack you, but I strongly disagree with that, and it seems like most other people do as well.

So explain, please, how my comment was so dumb? Because I don't want to encourage drivers to cross the line and possibly flatten my bike in the future? I know you're infallible, so just consider this comment addressed to all the OTHER drivers.

Because my comment NEVER said "I think this photo is UNCOOL because he couldn't stay in between the lanes."

Don't assume things without actually asking me a question that is related to my comment.

So congratulations for wasting my time once again my friend. Motor on.

Interesting. Talk about wasting time. Try re-reading my comment. I didn't assume ANYTHING. I asked you (and really the forum in general) a question.

And despite your obfuscation, it still stands.

Edited to add: I'm done with this argument. You make personal attacks instead of points, and the consensus is pretty clear on this issue (and it's not with you).

Well my butthurt friend, I wouldn't do that personally on the road of any kind if it truly makes you feel good. There's no reason for you to feel so upset about a comment that carried sarcastic-ness and humor. But I don't understand why the notion big words makes you think I wouldn't understand since I do have a college level background. So your welcome if my explanation made more sense. That should suffice the rest of your night:-).

Could have gotten the same pic even if he'd stayed in his own lane.. I'm sure Killboy has a few shots as he always does as each car goes by from different angles/car position etc... No excuse, but for the newbies, all the photo guys and sometimes their friends, even kids ( with canopys in the summer time ) standing around on the side of the road is a distraction for sure.. I've always been surprised that this is legal...

Really? Doing 70 in a 65 is as dangerous as driving on the wrong side of the road?

Anyone who can, in any way, excuse this type of driving, is a douce bag and a idiot. That Mini in that photo has the ugliest sticker placement I have ever seen, not cool in any way. Plus the driver missed the apex of that corner, so just another fail.

Telling on myself

Here is the welcoming I got going to Mini's Slay the Sleeping Dragon. I'd like to thank my Son who is a professional photographer that was taking pics of the scenery. Nice to have all this documented (sarcasm). Great hiding spot with about a two mile line of sight. I saw him but he had already seen me.....#%&@! Didn't have the ***** to tell the Trooper I had not even begun to drive fast. This was on the road coming into the Dragon from the South near Stecoah. 70 in a 55 for the record and I spent 4 hours in a defensive driving class yesterday. Now I have to pay some stupid tax to Graham County NC.

Here is his hiding spot and pics:

Nice:-). Well we all learn a lesson driving sometimes. I just got my ticket recently for improper turn but the judge let me off. First time I ever got pulled over besides spending and tint tickets. But just one thing for everyone not to forget: USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL when changing lanes:-). That's my biggest pet peeve.

It's that sort of money-grabbing policing that devalues legitimate road safety enforcement. If that cop didn't have ticket quotas then he would be doing more for road safety if he sat on the exit to the curve in the OPs post and got people crossing double yellows. Of course, the other reason they don't do this is that sort of infraction is easier to protest in court than evidence from a speed gun...

I hope you like the taste of your hat, then. And I want pictures, BTW.

I drive at or under the PSL, especially on the highway. 65 is more than fast enough for me with all the other bozos on the road.

HA! The last time I took my Vette on the Dragon, I was moving considerably faster than posted (in my lane, of course) when I ran up on a Jeep and was forced to drop back to the speed limit. About two turns later, as I was beaching about driving so slow, we passed a couple of Tennessee's finest sitting on a little side road. Said a quiet "thank you" to the jeep driver and waved at the troopers. The return trip was at a more sedate pace.

Depends on the circumstances.....

doing 70 in a 65, when everyone else is doing 65....yes, it can be potentially as dangerous as driving on the wrong side of the road when no one else is coming.....

like i said before, i dont condone, promote, encourage doing stupid things in a car.....but we all have at one point or another.....

at the end of the day, if no one gets hurt, whats the issue?

if this guy had caused an accident, then yes, throw the book at him.....but why get in a tissy if nothing happened? to set an example? people know what they are doing, and they know the potential concequences for their actions, so prosecuting just to prosecuting is a waste of time and effort.

Too Risky for me. Where is the Dragon. Is that the road out east with the most curves per mile through beautiful hills? I think my son told about this. I would love to drive it...with a sane mind. If any of you are out in Washington State, you would love Chuckanut Drive south of Bellingham. Love that road back in the day of my RX-7 and then Honda CRX-si. I think my new Mini S would cream them both! sad to see the highway from Loveland to Estes Park washed away a couple months ago. We drove that last summer before the Mini. Fun road.

FYI, the owner of the MINI has posted the following message over on the THMMC site in response to our thread about it over there:

As the car owner I want to say we very much regret that happened and promise it will not happen again. We know how important it is to the reputation of the club and everyones safety. Again we are sorry and it will not happen again. Thank you for taking us to task for it
Just reposting it here as I'm not sure whether he'll be able to make it around to all the places the photo has been shared to on the Internet (it is a considerable number).

I don't claim to be a perfect driver by any means. I have been to the dragon once so far. I made it a point to stay on my side of the road. I was heading down to Bridal veil falls one day and was behind another MINI. I wasn't pushing him to go faster at least I didn't think I was until we went into a blind corner and he went way over the yellow line. I was able to stay in my lane with no problem however. I gave him plenty of room after that. Now had we gone around that corner 10 seconds later he would have caused an accident. By the time I got into the turn there was a car coming the other way.

Now there was this one time I was on a real nice winding mountain road and I was crossing the yellow line. I was able to see at least 4-5 turns ahead. does it make it right or safe? Not at all. this was also at like 5am on a very lightly traveled section of road. And in a mustang (which almost requires 2 lanes to get through a corner!) I would never try something like that on the dragon.
