Portable jump starters v.s Cables
Portable jump starters v.s Cables
What're your thoughts on jumper starters vs. jump cables?
I don't mind recharging it a few times out of the year but it's to my understanding that they're essentially just a battery and eventually need to be replaced a few years down the road-- rendering it completely useless. Is it correct to assume the "shelf-life" of these things are 2-3 years?
Saw a few decent ones for around $50- with decent reviews. Curious to hear what you guys think

I've had a jump starter that has lasted almost 10 years, yes it needs to be recharged every 3 months or so. But I've only had to use it twice to jump one of our cars in 10 years (although it has a built in air compressor that I use more often). I've probably jumped another car with the cables (at work) much more often.
The primary advantage of a jump starter vs. cables is that you don't need a second vehicle for an emergency start. If you carry a set of cables in your car, and have a second vehicle (or another battery) in the garage, cables are probably a better and less costly option for the few times you might need it in the future.

Sorry to stray from the subject but couldn't help but notice you only have 18k miles on your 04 ? is it just a weekend car? I have an 04 as well but I am at 90k. As for the jumpers I have had one for prob. close to 10 yrs also and mine still seems to do the job the few times I have needed.

Jump starters are more convenient. Like stated in a prior post you don't need a second vehicle, also it doesn't matter where your vehicle dies (battery position) as some jumper cables require both batteries to be within 10 feet of each other.
I have gotten from 7-10 years out of the batteries (I have changed them myself) on my jump packs.
I wouldn't recommend an all-in-one (jump pack, air pump, inverter) because they take up more room and if one of the other components dies (usually the inferior air pump) then it becomes a large waste of space.
That's all I can think of now.
