sunroof trim rattle in a R53

Recently bought an '02 MCS. The plastic trim around the sunroof (inside the car) rattles really bad, around the sunroof control switch. I've replaced the plastic push clips that hold it on. I've also added some homemade foam washers on the clips and between the metal bracket and what the bracket screws into to. It still rattles and drives me nuts. If the radio is up really loud it's not as bad, but sometimes I just want to listen to the engine in my way to work.

Has anyone had this and what did you do to fix it?

I remember someone relating an answer about this question they got from a MINI tech:

They all either rattle or leak... just be glad yours rattles

Mine is a bit noisy as well, subscribed to this thread for interest.

I will try to dig into it some more next weekend. I'll post any findings.

I don't know what it looks like underneath, but I had a thought. If I'm wrong, since you've taken it apart, you would probably know. I was thinking that it may be a wire rattling around in there somewhere. So what about some cable ties and lining the area with foam? Just a thought. I could be wrong.

I'll check but it sounds too loud for a wire or cable. I can hear it over the radio most of the time and it gets better when it's warmer outside.

I bet if you remove the wind deflectors the rattle will go away. I've used Velcro as padding (the soft side) on the deflectors too.

Good luck,

Nik

They seem to rattle more in the winter when it is colder out. So I just pull them in the winter, and put them back in during the spring and summer. Don't really use the sunroof that much in the winter months anyways.

I put some 2" wide industrial Velcro (soft side) on both sides of the flaps and no more rattling! FIXED

Now my garage door opener is rattling. More Velcro and I think I'm done.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. We had the same problem with our 2002 S and we solved the problem with 2" wide self-adhesive weather stripping. It worked great. I totally agree with wanting to hear the motor some days. Such a sweet sound.
