MINI Camper

Came across this today:

I think it would be easier to set up a conventional tent than to climb the roof of your car with a ladder.

I didn't catch that.

I bet if they made and sold it, people would buy it.

This too:

These sorts of trailers do exist and I didn't click the thumbnails because I knew they existed. But the plate on this car is obvious.

You'd have to be a midget (or a mini me) to get into one of those trailers.

I don't know why you couldn't pull a camper with a MINI. A friend of mine pulled this Aliner pop-up with his Gold Wing from Virginia to Alaska and back with zero problems.

Getting in them is a little interesting but, once your in there it is a full size bed with a TV. Closer to real camping then an RV. All the other stuff is in the back of the trailer were it lifts up and you can access it.

I was wondering the other day if anyone tried this on a MINI before. How much can the Countryman roof rack handle in terms of weight? Although the pic is obviously a joke, these type of tents DO exist... I've seen it refereed to as desert camping or desert tents maybe?

I have seen these for real as well and it is pretty cool. I know they are often custom made to order so I wonder if you can get maybe an all aluminum unit so it is extra light weight. My understanding is they are often heavily made out of wood products.

How about this one from Minitears? Love it! On his site you can see all of the assembly photos. I WANT ONE. This one is not a joke or a hoax. About $8,000 and you can have one custom built.

Very nice! I doubt I could convince my spouse to get one.

Actually just about anything can tow a TearDrop. I am also a frequent forum goer at Tear Drops and Tiny Trailers http://www.tnttt.com/ and there is a guy who built one to be towed by his Chevy Aveo....

I built mine (4' x 8') for under $4000 and it is very light weight and towable by just about anything....though I'd never tow it with my MINI just because the Coupe isn't the best car to take camping in general.

Anyway these Teardrops are easy to build and you can make it to your custom needs. I build mine to be as light s possible and the whole camper and trailer weigh about 600lbs. sleeps 2 comfortably and is a great alternative to tent camping.

I started with this $50 Craigslist Find:

Then this:

Got the Frame powdercoated then figuring out the shape I wanted:

One side wall being build:

Both walls and front wall installed:

The "Box" more completed (now with outter-sides):

Fibreglassing the outside walls:

Almost finished:

Nice job, DBG.

What are you going to skin it with? Aluminum? Fiberglass? Cedar shingles?

We are Definitely going to have a teardrop in the next year or so. I have been bitten by the bug and I am currently trying to figure out how to pay for it. I plan on getting one light enough to pull with the Clubman.
