Turbo Heat shield (Do I need one?)

I have done a lot of reading about the turbo heat shields out on the market and I know they help with the possible problem of melting the hood scoop and affecting the life of the bonnet stripes. I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S.

My question is since I do not race, even when I step of the pedal and play I have a good portion of normal driving before I turn the car off, is this something I probably do not need?

I like to be proactive and not run into any problems down the road I can avoid is possible.

It seems to me most of the problems with he turbo charger getting to hot are from those who race the car. This is my daily driver and even though I enjoy the power of the car I am not going to be pushing her.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks Dan

I melted mine, and it's a daily driver. That being said, I don't have a heatshield, as I haven't replaced the scoop yet. It's a bit saggy in the middle, but I don't mind it too much. I'm saving for something functional from M7 or some carbon fiber bits.

I ordered my MINI with the carbon fiber scoop and have had no issue with it.

Whether the heat shield would have helped or not I don't know but I did put my hand on the hot turbo ONE time, and let me tell you...it is HOT!

I am mostly worried about the new stripes I just had installed, would hate to see them get damaged.
I have heard the carbon scoop does not have a problem with warping, I do not have carbon.

I don't know much about this but I would wonder if the shield would only keep the heat from dissipating therefore causing more problems.

After I put a heat shield on mine the difference in the hood temperature after a commute was remarkable. I think it's well worth your $35 or so to not worry about melting the scoop or baking on the stripes.

That's the one. Now I'm wondering why I was thinking I spent $35. Methinks I paid too much!

I got this one - it looks like it's the same one:

I have the Chrome scoop and after 3 months the Chrome peeled. Dealer replaced the scoop under warranty and suggested I purchase the heat shield. 3 months later with the heat shield no peeling. I'm not saying that was the issue, but temp wise on the scoop it helps.

The ECS page states "Genuine MINI". Does anyone know if the MINI Parts counter stocks these?

I called the local dealer and they said the part was $30.
Since they are an hour away it Is easier to order on line.

It's a $28 part at the MINI dealer with my BMW CCA/MINI discount. I bought the shield after I noticed the scoop start to warp, and then I had the scoop replaced under warranty. They gave me another shield and said it now comes with the replacement scoop. (they even did a no charge clearbra replacement on the scoop.)

They would not let me get the carbon JCW scoop even if I payed the difference in cost out of my pocket.

So I've got a new shield sitting in the garage. First $25 and I'll ship it out.

I've got a new scoop on order at the dealer for my '09 R55 (warranty replacement). I'll be very curious if it comes with the new heat shield. If not, I'll certainly be asking for one!

On my new Clubman JCW, I asked the dealer if they would provide the heat shield as a preventative measure. My justification was that they would not have to replace the scoop (and heat shield) in a year or two when it melts. Their answer: "If it an't broke now, don't fix it". Well that was sort of their answer. The main decision maker there in Service will not be back until next week. I wanted to prevent any issues now, so I paid for the shield out of my pocket - no big deal.

So I get home and although a somewhat self-explanatory install, I'm not sure if the proper way is to "tuck" the excess in the inner scoop area of the hood -OR- leave the excess out and exposed? I have seen photos of both, but am leaning towards the second - out and exposed. This may keep more heat away from the inner scoop. There were no instructions included - sort of funny considering wheel locks come with instructions.

How has the dealer been putting the heat shield on for those that have it?

Thanks.

I've only seen this kind of shield "tucked". I think NM makes a different kind of heat shield that is "untucked."

I was planning on doing mine like this, but the middle slot had to be trimmed approx 1/8 (x2 sides) to fit the center area under the scoop. After I trimmed it, then the flaps were too long. Instead of trimming these, I just attached the entire thing exposed. Seems like it may do more good this way. I'll take pictures next day or so. I am afraid the two little plastics screw inserts to keep it up there may get loose and the whole thing will fall in the belts/fan.

I had trouble getting mine to fit all the way in too, kind of like you describe - keep fiddling with it because I think you might not have the tabs in juuust the right spot inside the hood. Eventually I got mine in the right spot, and it slid all the way in. No trimming needed.

Warped hood scoop

Hello everyone, the turbo needs cooling, airflow wrapping it in anything will cause problems down the road. I live in Georgia and I had mine replaced 3 times under warranty. When the dealership was replacing the 3rd one, I just asked them to install the Carbon Fiber hood scoop I brought on the internet, they did and I don't have any more warping problem.
I chose this route because I spoke to a lot of people on South West United States, and that seems to be the best route to go.
Anyway mine has been on the for 1.5 years now even with the temp reaching 100 + my warping problems are no more.
The dealer gave me the last one they ordered for my car, when they installed the Carbon Fiber one.
IMO I would say just get the Carbon Fiber hood scoop and not give this another thought.
Check out my gallery and see how it looks!

I was not going to cheap out on my 30+k car. I fixed the problem completely with the NM Titanium Heat shield:

http://www.nm-eng.com/254/11/0/2608/...at-shield.html

and Minifini Intake Scoop Grill:

http://www.minifini.com/ShopDetail.aspx?id=64

I live in Georgia where it's hot and drive very...spirited.
